Job Summary

The Maintenance Technician I is responsible for performing light and heavy duty maintenance duties as directed.

Essential Job Functions and Performance Indicators

The intent of this job description is to provide a representative and level of the types of duties and responsibilities that will be required of positions given this title and shall not be construed as a declaration of the total of the specific duties and responsibilities of any particular position. Employees may be directed to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.

Job Responsibilities

  • Maintain buildings and facilities
  • Perform periodic maintenance as directed
  • Maintain and repair residential electrical and plumbing systems
  • Perform preventive maintenance on equipment including hvac systems


Service Orientation

  • Maintain all tools and equipment
  • Maintain uniforms and personal appearance


Communication, Collaboration, and Teamwork

  • Collaborate with others when necessary to accomplish assigned tasks
  • Communicate additional needs to management
  • Take direction from supervisors without complaint
  • Maintain radio communication with management and staff at all times


Planning, Organizing, and Accountability

  • Keep maintenance areas clean and organized
  • Log time and work performed through proper work order system.


Initiative, Problem-Solving, and Decision Making

  • Adhere strictly to safety standards and practices
  • Utilize all available skills to find, troubleshoot, and repair issues that would otherwise be detrimental to University owned property


Support the Mission of the University

  • Support the mission of the university and serve as an ambassador of the university.

Required Qualifications – Required qualifications to effectively perform the job. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered. (Additional requirements may be designated by position.)

  • High School diploma or equivalent is preferred
  • Must have a valid driver’s license
  • Must have 2 or more years’ experience in maintenance or construction related fields, including a considerable knowledge of common practices, tools, equipment, and materials used

  • Must have good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Must be able to execute multiple tasks according to specifications.
  • Must have strong professional integrity and ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
  • Ability to use good judgment, think critically, and communicate effectively.
  • Must have experience operating and maintaining equipment and hand-powered tools.
  • Must be able to demonstrate above average knowledge of construction practices, electricity, and plumbing.


Work Environment – Environmental or atmospheric conditions commonly associated with the performance of the functions of this job.

  • University campus grounds indoors and outdoors
  • Exposure to all types of weather and extreme temperatures
  • Must have reliable vehicle for on campus transportation.

  • Must be able to traverse the campus in all weather conditions and work in extreme temperatures.
  • Position requires the ability to stand, squat, reach and lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to stand and walk continuously through shift.
  • Must be able to climb stairs and ladders.
  • Must be able to report to work during emergencies, unless otherwise notified.
  • Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function.
  • Must be able to report to campus within one hour when on call.
