Occidental College is a small rigorous liberal arts institution in Los Angeles with a curricular emphasis on social justice, community-based learning, and global citizenship. The Center for Digital Liberal Arts (CDLA) at Occidental helps to prepare Oxy’s diverse and talented students for a rapidly changing world through a variety of programs and offerings, including research support for students and faculty, digital media production tools and software, and professional development for faculty in digital pedagogy and scholarly communication.
SUMMARY OF DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES AND GOALSThe CDLA supports textual, visual, and archival modes of inquiry across the arts and humanities through a focus on resource curation, sharing, and analysis. The Specialist is a two-year limited term position with possibility of renewal. We seek a Specialist who will:
- Collaborate directly with arts and humanities faculty to realize student learning goals, participate in related grant and funding opportunities, and inform assessments of student learning.
- Research and implement best practices in digital pedagogy and instructional design in the arts and humanities with a focus on visual, music, and other media resources, humanities databases, archival resources, and digital humanities practices.
- Work with Academic Affairs, Arts and Humanities departments, and related academic support units to develop and integrate information literacies across the curriculum.
- Facilitate effective application of tools, methods and materials of primary inquiry (e.g., visual imagery, documents, artifacts, sound files) for undergraduate research.
- Develop and instruct advanced workshops and advise students about research resources, methods, and scholarly practices across the arts and humanities.
- Supervise and mentor student workers.
- Provide research and insight on emergent arts and humanities resources, identify and advocate for learning space, software, hardware, and other resource needs specific to the arts and humanities.
- Track emerging trends in pedagogy and technology across the arts and humanities; experiment with new approaches to scholarly content creation and presentation.
- Assess work activities, analyze evaluative data, and compile and report same – as required.
- Oversee and participate in a range of relevant special projects.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Master’s or Doctoral degree in library and information science or in a relevant arts or humanities discipline.
- Working knowledge of arts and humanities research practices and methods; demonstrated expertise using a range of visual and information resources; experience with visual resource management and digital publishing platforms (e.g., ArtStor, Scalar, Omeka)
- Experience in an academic setting providing teaching, technology and/or student/faculty research support in the arts and humanities; familiarity with liberal arts educational models preferred.
- Excellent project management, communication and presentation skills.
- Ability to work well and inclusively with a diverse set of students, faculty, and staff.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively and creatively as a team member or independently.
- Proactive, intellectually curious, and self-motivated learner.
