The Department of German Language and Literatures at Oberlin
College invites applications for the position of
Faculty-in-Residence and Lecturer in the Department of German
Language and Literatures. This is a full-time, 10-month, live-in
position. The appointment will be made for the academic year
2018-19 beginning mid-August 2018. Appointment will carry the rank
The incumbent will teach three courses in German over two
semesters (German 101, 102, and 305, Conversation and Composition).
As Faculty-in-Residence in the Max Kade German House, a residence
hall which houses approximately 35 program students, the incumbent
will design and carry out successful programs for residents and
visitors to support German language acquisition and meaningful
engagement with multi-faceted German culture. The
Faculty-in-Residence will promote the German House through a range
of social media including listservs and websites, and work with
German faculty to build a community of German learners. The
incumbent is required to live at the German House while the College
is in session and to dine with students in the program.
Responsibilities also include supervising one Language Teaching
Assistant from Germany by providing direction, support, mentorship
and constructive feedback.
Required educational and experiential qualifications include
native or near-native proficiency in German, a broad familiarity
with German culture, and the M.A. degree in German or related
fields in hand or expected by August 2018. Candidates must
demonstrate interest and potential excellence in undergraduate
teaching. Successful teaching experience at the college level is

Compensation is competitive, depending on qualifications and
experience. The Lecturer and Faculty-in-Residence will also be
provided with a furnished apartment in the German House,
year-round, and, along with immediate dependents, will receive
meals in the College dining halls while the College is in session.
Additionally the incumbent may take up to five credit hours in one
course per semester. Also included are paid vacation, group health
insurance, and other benefits.
