This is a pool search: We are looking for qualified Biology faculty. Courses are taught at the Des Plaines and Skokie campus.


Job Description:

BIO106 - Introduction to Environmental Science
Laboratory course introduces study of the environment in which we live and of factors contributing to its alteration. Content includes ecosystem structure and function; population dynamics; resources; pollution; evaluation and management of natural areas; biodiversity and conservation; overview of ecological balances in nature and humans??? relationship to these balances. Intended for non-science majors.

BIO107 - Ecological Restoration
Laboratory course provides a broad overview of ecological restoration principles and practices by exploring the plant and animal communities found on Oakton???s campus and learning practices for restoring them to ecological health. Activities emphasize identifying and learning about native plant and animal communities and the natural and artificial processes that affect their survival, reproduction, and population dynamics. Students will participate in identifying species and assemblages; monitoring plant and animal populations; collecting and mapping spatial data; managing invasive plants; and revegetating land with seeds and plantings.

BIO122 - General College Biology II
Laboratory course continues BIO 121. Content includes Mendelian genetics, chromosomes and heredity, evolution, diversity of living organisms (including bacteria, archaea, selected protists, fungi, plants and animals), and ecology. Second of two-course sequence.

BIO109 - Plants and Society
Course focuses on biological aspects of the plant kingdom and connections to human beings, with topics ranging from sub-cellular processes to ecological roles. Content includes structural and physiological adaptations, present and past diversity, reproduction, genetics and evolution, ecological interactions, and importance to human agriculture, medicine, general welfare and society

Part-time faculty are paid on a lecture hour equivalents (LHE) basis. For most courses, the LHE is the same as a credit hour. For others, the LHE represents additional work for teaching the class, such as grading papers for Composition classes or teaching a class with a laboratory section (computers, languages, and the sciences); in those cases, the LHE represents a figure higher than the credit hour. All part-time faculty start at the beginning pay rates, regardless of the level and type of experience obtained elsewhere. For the 2019-20 academic year rates are $1132/LHE for faculty without doctorates and $1212/LHE for faculty with doctorates.

Part-time faculty advance one step within the salary schedule with the successful completion of 2 fall & spring semesters where 3+ credit hours are taught in each semester.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Construct a course syllabus for each course assigned, consistent with the generic course syllabus, stipulating course objectives, content and grading criteria.
  • Prepare course presentations and instructional materials using active learning methods and a variety of instructional strategies, deliver instruction to students with those presentations and materials at each class session delivered in person on campus or online.
  • Meet with courses and laboratories at scheduled times.
  • Instruct, advise, consult with and evaluate the performance of enrolled students.
  • Maintain clear records on student performance involved with the evaluation and grading of student performance.
  • Participate in department meetings and comply with department decisions regarding instructional matters.
  • Participate in department and institutional assessments of student learning and in department and institutional surveys.
  • Comply with institutional procedures.
  • Attend and participate in divisional meetings, committee, task force, and other institutional organization meetings, as assigned.
  • Schedule office hours with at least one office hour held weekly for every three credit hours taught.
  • Engage in professional development activities to maintain professional skills and currency in the profession and improve the quality of student learning.



Requirements:

Master's degree in biology, one of the biological sciences, or biology education with at least 18 graduate hours in biology.
Master's degree or higher degree in related field of study with at least 18 graduate hours in biology.

Preferred:

  • College teaching experience
  • Doctoral degree in biology, one of the biological sciences, or biology education with at least 18 graduate hours in biology.


This is for a pool position, but I intent to hire at least one faculty member for fall 2020.

Faculty should have experience using an LMS, but are not expected to have taught courses online or in a hybrid format. Bio 106 is currently the only course that is taught in a hybrid format.

Part-time faculty are hired on a semester-by-semester basis. A reasonable effort is made to assure the assignment of courses to more senior part-time faculty who are fully qualified by virtue of their education, training, work experience as related to current technology and pedagogical techniques, and who have had a history of successful performance at Oakton Community College.

All assignments are conditioned on sufficient enrollment. Once a course starts, the part time faculty member is expected to complete the course.
