The University of Florida’s School of Art + Art History (SA+AH) seeks a full-time, twelve month, Non-Tenure-Track Lecturer in graphic design. The preferred start date is January 1, 2021. The start date is negotiable if necessary. We seek a forward-looking educator with strong intellectual, communication, organizational, and leadership skills to contribute to and advance the program through teaching and service. This faculty position will provide leadership to our certificate in graphic design degree and our design foundation level, as well as contribute to our community-based professional and social practice course. The ideal candidate will have experience with user experience and interaction design, information design, and/or motion design as well as demonstrate an understanding of contemporary design issues, methods, and technologies, and engage questions of culture and community.

Responsibilities: Teach four courses in the Fall and Spring semesters (or their equivalent) and two courses in the summer at the undergraduate level. Actively engage in service to the Graphic Design Program, School, College, and University. Participate in curriculum and program development and outreach.

GRAPHIC DESIGN PROGRAM: Established over 50 years ago, we offer undergraduate and graduate degrees in graphic design. Our alumni work in a range of positions including art direction, user experience design, design strategy, brand development, environmental and exhibition design, and numerous other specialties within print and communication design. The undergraduate program in Graphic Design is centered on a uniquely collaborative studio/classroom environment where students work together within a vibrant learning community. This structure is key to our curriculum as it empowers and prepares students for life-long careers as design professionals. SCHOOL OF ART + ART HISTORY: Organized within the College of the Arts, the mission of the School of Art and Art History (SA+AH) is to nurture a culture of critical inquiry in scholarly and creative pursuits. The faculty within the SA+AH seeks to empower each individual student with knowledge, skills, and insight to thoughtfully respond to our changing world. The SA+AH is driven by the knowledge that visual and scholarly research is vital to the work of the larger university and that this research enhances the lives of its regional, national and international communities. Most of our programs have a focus on socially engaged, global research. Studio programs in art and design view production as an expanded practice - one that is interdisciplinary, inclusive, and often collaborative. School of Art + Art History Faculty publish, curate and exhibit widely and internationally. They bring their scholarship and production into their teaching, offering innovative, engaged learning experiences to their students. The school has 430 undergraduate students, and more than 120 graduate students. Degree programs include the B.A., B.F.A., M.A., M.F.A., and Ph.D. Areas of study include art history, art education, museum studies, graphic design, and studio art (art + technology, ceramics, creative photography, drawing, painting, printmaking, and sculpture). Also a part of the School of Art + Art History is the 4Most Gallery and the University Galleries—University Gallery, the Gary R. Libby Gallery, and Grinter Gallery — which provide exhibition space for professional and student artwork. Minimum Requirements :

  • Possess a terminal degree (MFA, MDes, MGD, PhD) in graphic design or closely related field.
  • Have a minimum of one academic year experience in teaching or instructional experience in design.
  • Be conversant with contemporary design issues, conceptual approach to design, design thinking, and/or design research.
  • Evidence of success in promoting an environment that advances diversity, equity, and inclusion.


Preferred Qualifications :

  • Evidence of teaching or professional practice in UI/UX, data visualization, and/or motion design.
  • Demonstrated teaching and/or professional practice oriented toward Design Futures.
  • Strong evidence of successful, student-oriented teaching in design at the undergraduate level.
  • Evidence with developing productive teaching connections and/or partnerships for social practice within local and university communities.
  • Demonstrated ability in curriculum and program development.
  • Maintain an active engagement with design research and/or creative practice.
