Job Description

As the University Chemical Hygiene Officer, ensures safe laboratory operations by University personnel through education and the annual inspection process. Responsible for the development and administration of the Lab Safety, fume hood and safety shower programs, including interpretation of regulations, development and implementation of programs, and promotion/enforcement of policy.

Required Qualifications

Advanced degree with emphasis in science or engineering, or training and experience equivalent to an advanced degree. Considerable experience with a wide variety of multidisciplinary labs. Working knowledge of the Laboratory Safety Standard, OSHA, EPA, and DOT regulations; demonstrated effective communication skills; ability to safely move and handle up to 50 pounds; good knowledge of computers and software (such as data entry/recording, word processing, etc.); demonstrated effective interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Safety experience in an academic environment. Familiarity with the Virginia Tech campus. Chemical Hygiene Officer certification.

Salary Range

$64,000-$69,000

Additional Information

Must be able to walk/stand for long periods of time. Must be able to travel to work sites and during site visits may stand, lift, reach, push/pull, walk, climb, stoop and bend. Work environment may involve some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following established safety precautions. Ability to use PPE (including wearing a respirator) as required per safety procedures. Repetitive movement through use of computer/keyboarding. Must have a criminal background check. Must have a driver's license check. Emergency Personnel health & safety related. Must be able to perform job duties beyond normal work schedule, as needed. On occasion may have off-campus travel that may require overnight stay.
