Title: Academic Support Center Tutoring - Peer Tutor, Tutor I, Tutor II, Tutor III, Tutor IV (Temporary Part-Time)

Position Summary: Tutor students in order to improve their academic performance.

Department: Academic Support

Location: Tutors will work from one or more of the five Pellissippi State campuses.

Pay Rate: Amount of pay per hour according to academic level. Peer Tutor (Student/No Degree) $8.50, Tutor I (Associate’s Degree) $12.00, Tutor II (Bachelor’s Degree) $14.00, Tutor III (Master’s Degree) $16.00, Tutor IV (PhD) $18.00

Duties and Responsibilities:

90% – Tutor students individually and in groups. Adapt tutoring methods to meet students’ varying
needs and interests. Tutor through questioning, discussion, and demonstration.

5% – Complete tutor training activities and required paperwork.

3% – Confer with other tutors and teachers to resolve students’ problems.

2% – Communicate with Academic Support personnel.

Note: the College reserves the right to change or reassign job duties, or combine positions at
any time.

Required Qualifications:

A. Approval by department dean and/or program coordinator in subject areas is mandatory for all tutors. Referral letters may be
requested.

B. Unofficial transcripts must be provided that show minimum qualifications.

C. Applicant must be dependable, professional, and trust worthy.

D. Applicant must have interpersonal skills, tact, patience, and courtesy.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Work Characteristics:

A. A degree is not required, but the candidate must have successfully completed the class(es) that
he/she will be tutoring and received a grade of B or better in the class.

B. A math tutor does not have to have a degree, but the candidate must have successfully completed the next higher class for the subject that will be tutored and received a grade of B or better in that class. For example, in order to tutor Calculus II, a candidate must have completed
Calculus III and received a B or better in that class.

C. Skills in both verbal and written communication are required.

D. Ability to adjust to different learning styles is critical.

E. Tutors must be able to utilize some computer applications, including use of the Internet.

Non-Essential Functions:

A. Greet students entering Academic Support Centers.

B. Knowledge of PSCC coursework and requirements.

C. Enforce rules for behavior.

D. Publicize tutoring by going to classrooms and explaining services in the ASCs.

E. Multi-tasking abilities.

F. Perform related duties as assigned.
