The University of Georgia, a land-grant and sea-grant university with state-wide commitments and responsibilities, is the state’s oldest, most comprehensive, and most diversified flagship institution of higher education. UGA was founded in 1785 by the Georgia General Assembly as the first state-chartered university in the country. The University of Georgia is currently ranked among the top 20 public universities in U.S. News & World Report and is recognized as a very high research activity and community engaged institution by the Carnegie Foundation.

UGA has made remarkable progress during the last five years toward its goal of becoming one of America’s premier comprehensive research universities. In FY 2019, the research expenditures total has reached $470 million, an all-time high. As a national leader in technology commercialization, UGA research is also creating tremendous economic impact to the state and the nation. UGA was ranked number 1 in the nation for the number of new products reaching the market and number 4 for the number of intellectual property licenses executed according to Association of University Technology Managers ( AUTM ). UGA is developing the Innovation District to continue to promote innovation, entrepreneurship and commercialization.

UGA is reaching new heights in undergraduate education. The latest data shows the six-year completion rate reaching a record 87%, and the four-year completion rate increased to a record 69%. In addition, the first-year retention rate, another important measure of student success, has matched the university’s all-time high of 96%. These student success metrics compare well with top public institutions in the country. UGA is the first comprehensive research university to require all undergraduate students to engage in hands-on, experiential learning within a domestic or global setting as a graduation requirement. In 2019, the university was recognized with the William M. Burke Presidential Award for Excellence in Experiential Education by the National Society for Experiential Education.

Over the past five years, philanthropic support for faculty scholarship and students also skyrocketed. Annual donations have increased 106 percent to $242 million—indicating an expanded culture of giving at this institution. Over the course of the Commit to Georgia campaign, more than 90 endowed chairs and professorships have been created, as well as more than 500 need-based scholarships for undergraduate students.

UGA’s main campus is located in Athens, Georgia, 70 miles northeast of Atlanta. It has campuses in Griffin and Tifton, and programs in Gwinnett and Atlanta. UGA employs approximately 2,000 full-time instructional faculty and more than 7,000 full-time staff.
