Job Summary

Smead Aerospace Engineering Sciences at the University of Colorado Boulder invites applications for a full-time instructor to teach in its undergraduate program. The instructor will be a member of the AES faculty and will participate in course development and assessment, faculty governance, and university service.

Who We Are

CU Boulder's Ann and H.J. Smead Department of Aerospace Engineering Sciences is nationally known for teaching and research that address both challenges and opportunities facing the aerospace profession. Students work extensively on hands-on experiments in the Integrated Teaching and Learning Laboratory and design projects alongside expert faculty in the department's world-class research centers. CU aerospace alumni are working at top companies and research labs, including the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Johnson Space Center, The Boeing Company, and Lockheed Martin.

We are home to 58-tenure track, research, and instructional faculty, over 450 graduate students and 1,000 undergraduates. Our vibrant community of engineers and scientists tackle challenges in aerospace technology and science.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Viable candidates should be capable of teaching a wide range of undergraduate aerospace engineering courses in both lecture and laboratory formats. Candidates are expected to fit into curriculum groups focused on a) fluids and aerodynamics and/or b) dynamics and controls. These areas include courses related to thermo-fluids fluid dynamics, aircraft performance, rockets, aircraft dynamics and control, aircraft propulsion, rocket propulsion, and attitude dynamics & control. Engineering design or operational experience in one or both of these areas is ideal. An understanding and appreciation for aerospace engineering fundamentals, as well as excellent management, communication, and organizational skills, along with a willingness to learn quickly, is required. A successful candidate in this position will teach multiple courses during the academic year and summer terms. This instructor position typically has an 80% teaching load and 20% service component, but these allocations are negotiable for a highly qualified applicant. Research is typically not included in this position, unless related to engineering education.

What We Can Offer
Salary range for this position is $65,000-$100,000. This is a 9-month academic year pay; instructors can charge summer months for teaching or special projects, provided funds are available and with permission of the chair. Department is willing to offer moving expenses for the selected candidate.

What We Require

Candidates are sought who have an MS or PhD degree in either aerospace, aeronautical, astronautical engineering, or a closely related field.

What You Will Need

Applicants must possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills along with the ability to teach and work in a highly collaborative environment.

Preference will be given to applicants with prior university teaching experience, years of experience, and/or graduate degrees.
