Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in Education, Student Development, Higher Education, Psychology, Social Work, Counseling or a closely related field. Appropriate disciplines include: human resources, industrial-organizational psychology, coaching, career development, and/or counseling.
  • Five years of professional experience.
  • Strong technical proficiency and experience with career related software, word processing, database and desktop publishing applications.
  • A demonstrated understanding of career development issues for college students and alumni, and an ability to provide career coaching on these issues in individual and group settings.
  • Demonstrated experience regarding commitment to diversity, inclusion, and social justice.
  • Willingness and ability to work some irregular, flexible hours including evening and weekend hours.
  • Commitment to working in a team setting and leadership experience working across departments and/or units to accomplish common goals.
  • Analytical skills required to effectively assess program goals and student learning goals.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills for one-on-one and group interaction with various constituencies including students, faculty, parents, administrators and employers.
License/Certification Required Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Leadership and Planning (40%)

  • Serve as a member of the Career Development Leadership Team with the Director, the Associate Director for Student Employment and Internship, and the Associate Director for Employer Relations and Marketing. This team plans the work of the Career Development Center to reflect the University Mission as well as the vision and goals of the Career Development Center.
  • Manage the team of Career Development Professionals that provide direct services to students and serve as liaisons to specific academic colleges and affinity groups. This includes 4 FTE assistant directors (3 Career Coaches, 1 Career Exploration Counselor), a Career Exploration Coordinator ( FTE who reports to the Career Exploration Counselor), 1-2 Graduate Assistants, and the undergraduate peer Career Guides (7-9/annually). Includes supervision, training, coaching, workflow, and evaluation. Associate Director will insure that career programs and outreach are tailored and personalized to address and support the needs and identities of our diverse student populations.
  • Provide leadership for engaging campus partners, particularly faculty, to be a part of the career development process for students. This will include trainings, meetings, presentations, and joint-programming with colleagues in both academic and co-curricular units.
  • Maintain ongoing professional development via involvement with relevant professional associations such as the National Association of Colleges and Employers ( NACE, the Southeastern Association of Colleges & Employers (SoACE) and the North Carolina Association of Colleges & Employers ( NCACE ). Serve as the facilitator of sharing emerging issues and trends with the career coaching professionals.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to diversity and inclusion in all professional actions.

Career Programming and Education (30%)

  • Coordinate the campus-wide system for career programming including career exploration, career coaching, job fairs, career treks, niche programming, etc. Clientele are current students and alumni in individual and in group settings, as well as face-to-face and virtually.
  • Collaborate with Director and Leadership Team to analyze data and assess outcomes to plan career programming and education that is most effective and sustainable with the greatest student impact.
  • Lead and Manage Career Development Team’s work plan and direction for the year. Will include assessment of needs and successes, cultivation of campus partnerships, management of employer expectations, identification of needs of specific student affinity groups, development of appropriate resources to support programming, integration of career readiness planning across campus.
  • Collaborate with the Employer Relations team to plan, coordinate and implement campus-wide employer development activities including career fairs, employer visitations, on-campus employer engagement opportunities, and on-campus recruiting, and the development of job and internship leads.
  • Develop a general knowledge and understanding of the programs of study offered at Appalachian, and maintain familiarity with the education, training and career opportunities and expectations of those assigned degree programs
  • Maintain exceptional skill using online career development tools specifically Handshake; integrate technology into daily operations, programs and presentations; work with Technology Support Analyst to insure all online materials are up-to-date, relevant, and appropriate.

Career Coaching (30%)

  • Serve as the primary career liaison and coach to the Reich College of Education including identifying and serving the needs of students, faculty, staff, potential employers, etc. Provide collaborative programming between RCOE and the Career Development Center.
  • Provide career coaching both individually and in group settings to RCOE majors. Topics will include career exploration, career planning, resume review, interview prep, job search strategies, online presence, etc.
  • Disseminate employment and internship opportunities to appropriate faculty, organizations, and students.
  • Serve as liaison to student affinity groups as assigned.
Suggested Salary Range $63,000 - $65,000 Physical Demands of Position
  • Ability to carry supplies to set up for events and career fairs.
