Instructor or Assistant Professor Department: Focused Inquiry Position Number: F18670 Application Deadline: January 31, 2018 Salary range: $41,000 - $46,640

Description: The University College at Virginia Commonwealth University is seeking a full-time non-tenure-track faculty member for a 1-year renewable appointment in the Department of Focused Inquiry beginning in Fall 2018. Three-year renewable contracts are available after three years of employment based on positive annual reviews. Faculty members teaching in the Department of Focused Inquiry participate in shared curricula, with the expectation that students across all sections of a course achieve similar learning objectives. Primary teaching responsibilities include instruction of UNIV 111, 112, and 200, which students are expected to complete in their first two years. This three-semester, interdisciplinary course sequence is learner-centered and promotes integrative thinking as well as student engagement, with a particular emphasis on written and oral communication, critical thinking, collaborative learning, information fluency, and ethical reasoning. Faculty are expected to participate actively in faculty development programs, including faculty learning communities, and to serve on committees within the University College and across the University. University College academic programs seek to promote an interdisciplinary approach to curriculum design and there may be additional opportunities to participate in curricular innovation and development.

Qualifications: The University College promotes a multi- and interdisciplinary approach to teaching and learning. We welcome candidates from any academic discipline with interest or experience in teaching interdisciplinary general education courses with an emphasis on written and oral communication and critical thinking. Evidence of excellence in college-level teaching is required. At least three years of college teaching experience in a general education curriculum is preferred. A master's degree in an academic discipline is required; a terminal degree is preferred. Strong communication skills, demonstrated ability to work in collaboration with others, and an interest in the scholarship of teaching and learning are essential. We welcome individuals from diverse experiences and backgrounds and/or with experiential learning through lived experiences and/or professional service that inform worldviews and/or perspectives about minority group status, to include race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, religion, and disability. Our faculty seek to broaden participation among members of underrepresented groups. Focused Inquiry faculty are expected to demonstrate through teaching, and/or public engagement the richness of diversity in the learning experience and integrate multicultural approaches and perspectives into instructional methods. Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU is required.
