About the College/Unit/Department

The College of Environment and Design and the Athens community:Located in vibrant and historic Athens, Georgia, UGA’s College of Environment and Design is home to the oldest landscape architecture program in the Southeast and the largest BLA program in the U.S. The College houses accredited BLA and MLA programs, as well as a Master of Historic Preservation, a Master of Urban Planning and Design, a Doctorate of Environmental Planning and Design, and several certificate programs including Environmental Ethics, Cultural Landscapes, and Historic Preservation. There is a strong spirit of collegiality and a wide range of research interests within the College’s diverse faculty. The BLA and MLA programs consistently rank among the top programs in the U.S. The College’s global presence includes regular programs at UGA’s campuses in Cortona, Italy, and a strong working relationship with Beijing Forestry University and Nanjing Forestry University in China, a study-abroad program in Croatia, and several additional collaborative agreements, including with universities in Bulgaria, Turkey, and Venezuela. Position Summary

The College of Environment and Design at the University of Georgia invites applications for the position of Associate Dean for Research and Faculty Development.

The new Associate Dean for Research and Faculty Development ( ADR ) will lead the scholarly and creative works of the College’s faculty, both funded and unfunded, and comprising a wide variety of projects including research grants and scholarship that leads to traditional peer-reviewed publications (e.g., articles, books), as well as design-based and digital publications and entrepreneurial activities (e.g., design-build projects, exhibitions, installations, websites).

The ADR will focus on pursuing collaborative and interdisciplinary funded research opportunities across the range of faculty expertise in design/planning, technology, the humanities, social, policy, and natural sciences from government, corporate, foundation, university, and other sources. The ADR will promote greater integration of research, scholarship, and creative work and be proactive in seeking new funding models, guiding proposal development, interpreting sponsor guidelines and regulations, and acting as a liaison with the University research grants-administrator offices. The ADR will work with the College’s Grants Coordinator and sign off on grant proposals and encumbrances to faculty research accounts. In addition, the ADR will lead in mentoring faculty, doctoral and other graduate students, thus helping to enhance their career development at all stages. The ADR will serve as head of the Promotion and Tenure Unit and advise faculty on building research and creative portfolios that advance the College’s and the University’s strategic plans.

The ADR will be tenured in one of the College’s programs and report directly to the Dean. This is an academic-year, tenured faculty position at the rank of Associate or Full Professor (preferred), with an administrative stipend, reduced teaching load, and the possibility of a summer appointment. There is also the possibility of endowment, depending on the candidate’s expertise. The start date will be July 1, 2020.

Additional Requirements

-An earned doctorate, MLA, MHP, MFA or other terminal degree in a field related to environment and design, landscape architecture, historic preservation, or urban planning and design.

-Ten years of relevant academic and/or administrative experience.
-To be eligible for tenure upon appointment, candidates must be appointed as an associate or full professor, have been tenured at a prior institution, and bring a demonstrably national reputation to the institution. Candidates must be approved for tenure upon appointment before hire.

Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, and/or Certification

-Candidates with a PhD, JD, or Doctor of Design.
-Professional licensure.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

The College seeks an accomplished scholar with a well-developed research agenda and ability to develop innovative, collaborative, and entrepreneurial initiatives within the College and in collaboration with other units of the University of Georgia, other universities, community partners, and beyond. Strong record in faculty and graduate students mentoring, as well as in collaborative and interdisciplinary funded research, is highly desirable. Vision and ambition to seek new funding models and expertise in guiding proposal development, interpreting sponsor guidelines and regulations, and acting as a liaison with university research grants-administrator offices, are also desirable.

The ideal candidate will have interdisciplinary expertise grounded in the College’s three main programs—historic preservation, landscape architecture, and urban planning and design—in relationship with fields such as architecture; civil and environmental engineering; ecology, geography, GIS, and geodesign; housing, health, and transportation; sustainability, resilience, and regeneration; and urban and environmental economics.
