Postdoctoral Associate in Experimental Astrophysics (57689)
The Experimental Astrophysics group at the University of Florida invites applications for a full-time postdoctoral associate position in ALPS, LIGO, and LISA beginning as early as February 1, 2020.
The axion-like particle search (ALPS) experiment is funded by the National Science Foundation and the Heising-Simons Foundation. The main experiment is located at the Deutsche Electron Synchrotron (DESY) in Hamburg, Germany. The interested postdoc is expected to work on the research, development and the design of the ALPS experiment as well as a follow up experiment to measure vacuum birefringence. Most of the work will be performed at the University of Florida although some travel to DESY is required.
The LIGO group at the University of Florida carries out research on LIGO instrument science related to the Input Optics of the LIGO interferometers, materials studies for future interferometers, and research on controls for gravitational-wave interferometers. The interested candidate is expected to participate in all aspects of this research.
LISA is the leading candidate for ESA’s L3 mission which is expected to be supported by NASA and the US scientific community through NASA grants. The interested postdoc is expected to work on tests related to the interferometry measurement system such as experimental tests and simulations of the telescope and the optical bench. While most work will be performed at UF, some travel to Goddard Space Flight Center and to ESA-member states in Europe is required.
The salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, and includes a full benefits package.
