CONTEXT OF THE JOB:

Under the general direction of a principal investigator, the Laboratory Coordinator I will perform research using accepted aquaculture procedures and techniques. The Laboratory Coordinator I will maintain the general operation of the Fisheries & Aquaculture Innovation Center, including the holding of adult fish and invertebrates, spawning and larval culture, as well as ordering of materials and supplies.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Participates in and provides technical support for various projects performed by members of the laboratory. Instructs students and others (e.g., visiting scientists) about routine techniques used in the laboratory.
  • Applies various standard laboratory methods associated with aquaculture to accomplish a variety of research assignments. Techniques used include the construction, maintenance of aquaculture systems, system cleaning and operation.
  • Participates in over-night or longer field work, including assignments in the river, bay, and coastal oceans.
  • Successfully spawns various invertebrate species including Eastern Oyster and Hard Clam
  • Prepares and processes experimental trials for analyses. Records experimental procedures, measurements, observations and results of tests. Documents any deviation from expected results.
  • Presents experimental results to the Principal Investigator and/or other members of the research group.
  • Maintains necessary records for reports.
  • Maintains and operates standard laboratory equipment such as pH meter, dissolved O 2 meter, microscope.
  • Responsible for requisition, security and inventory of supplies and/or equipment.
  • Helps the PI in preparation of scientific reports, publications, and proposals.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned


QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree with two years' experience in laboratory work. Degree in a biological science preferred.
  • Experience in the operation of aquaculture systems including pump and filter maintenance and repair.
  • In-depth knowledge of laboratory techniques, procedures, instrumentation and principles; scientific math including conversions.
  • Highly organized and a quick learner.
  • Ability to work independently and with a team.
  • Skills in the use of computers and basic office software applications.
  • Ability to implement assigned projects, analyze information and draw conclusions.
  • Ability to work independently from written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to train and instruct others.
  • Technical aptitude.
  • Extensive sea-going experience preferred.
  • Ability to work well with faculty and students.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and interact well with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds.
  • Demonstrates an understanding and consideration of the differing needs and concerns of individuals with varying identities, cultures and backgrounds.
