Architectural Studies Department Chair


University of Missouri-Columbia 

The Department of Architectural Studies at the University of Missouri-Columbia invites applications from Associate Professors/Professors for the position of Department Chair with an anticipated start date of January 2023. We seek candidates motivated to lead a diverse team of design educators and scholars. This chair will build and maintain collaborative and interdisciplinary research and contribute to the department’s strengths in human-centered design, sustainable design, and design computing. We seek a team player who is poised to develop strong relations with both internal and external stakeholders. Applicants from underrepresented groups are encouraged to apply. 

As principal executive officer of the department, the Chair is responsible to the Dean and to the department faculty for conducting the fiscal, academic, and personnel affairs of the department.  


  • Plan and manage departmental teaching, research, extension, and service activities; provide leadership and an innovative vision for the future of the program in these areas. 
  • Contribute to the reputation and research strength of the department in the design field by initiating, conducting, and publishing research. 
  • Represent the needs and aspirations of the department to the rest of the University and advance the departmental vision. 
  • Obtain extramural support for research agenda and other departmental missions. 
  • Communicate research findings to the public and various constituents. 
  • Support the research agendas of faculty, working collaboratively when possible. 
  • Nurture collaboration between teaching, research, and extension faculty. 
  • Lead CIDA accreditation of the interior design professional program 
  • Develop and maintain productive relationships with industry partners, including members of the Advisory Board. 
  • Engage in entrepreneurial and advancement activities to secure funding for departmental growth and goal attainment. 
  • Engage with community and foster long-term relationships. 

 About the Department 

  • Our mission is to advance scholarship and enable deep connections between people and place and between interior design and architecture. Our work prepares graduates to become lifelong problem-solving designers of the built environment. 
  • Emphases for both the Masters and PhD are in (1) Environment and Behavior and (2) Design with Digital Media. The PhD in Human Environmental Sciences is offered with an emphasis in Architectural Studies.

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Earned terminal degree with a minimum of one professional degree in interior design, architecture, or related design field. 

Candidates will be evaluated on: 

  • Evidence of collaborative leadership, teaching effectiveness and research competency. 
  • Credentials to lead accredited interior design and pre-architecture program.  
  • Innovative vision for future of the program across missions in teaching, research, and extension.
