The Digital News and Media Relations Coordinator provides leadership and strategic direction within University Marketing and Communications (UMC). This position produces high-impact communications that are aligned with South Dakota State University’s (SDSU) goals to effectively promote the University and its work, on time and with clear messaging, while working in close collaboration with and reporting to the Director of University Marketing and Communications.

Responsibilities

This position manages the day-to-day operations of UMC’s media relations, digital and strategic communications to identify, develop, produce, and promote engaging informational content for platforms including: the University website and NewsCenter, traditional media outlets, social media, digital newsletters, print publications, and other external and internal media. The position also determines the strategic direction and tactics to ensure the proper audiences are identified and reached within the desired outcomes of the communications.

In addition to creating content for various mediums, this position makes assignments to UMC content creators, oversees the creation of content and assures that all published content is consistent with AP standards and/or industry best practices. The Digital News and Media Relations Coordinator is also responsible for the promotion of an effective University experts list and helps to develop and maintain key relationships with local, regional, and national media, while serving as the primary media relations liaison for SDSU.

The Digital News and Media Relations Coordinator builds and fosters collaborative relationships with Deans of the colleges and Department Heads. This position is responsible for leveraging those relationships in order to stay informed and abreast of new developments, initiatives, research, and other notable University activities.

The successful candidate will serve on the University Marketing and Communications leadership team and in an important role with the University’s Emergency Management Team.

Essential duties and responsibilities include:

● Public and media relations, and internal/external communications activities that enhance awareness of SDSU and strengthen its position in the market and build upon an established brand and cultivate the University culture.

● Provide strategic leadership and direction in a collaborative role with other UMC team members for digital and news communications content on a daily basis.

● Write and pitch research news releases, programs, and feature stories to media outlets.

● Maintain a robust University experts list and write and pitch expert alerts to media to comment on stories of regional, national, and international interest.

● Respond to requests from media and manage database and media contact lists.

● Work closely with the Social Media Coordinator to develop and manage University social media channels that are specific to news, research, and media.

● Ensure content on the SDSU NewsCenter website is current.

● Provide leadership and media training to SDSU leadership and various areas of campus.

● Serve on the University’s Emergency Management team is a complementary role to the Director of University Marketing and Communications.

● Supervise and oversee positions focused on content creation for research and University publications produced through University Marketing and Communications.

Minimum qualifications for the position include:

● Bachelor’s degree required in Journalism, Communications, English or related field completed by start date.

● Authorized to work in the U.S. Sponsorship is not available for this position.

● At least three years of experience in journalism, university communications, or a related field.

● Experience in planning and execution of multi-medium strategic communications.

● Knowledge of current trends in media and media relations.

● Exceptional writing and editing skills, including proofreading according to AP style standards, grammar, spelling, and accuracy in work.

● Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.

● Understanding of web and digital communications as well as social media.

● Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite, including word processing and basic knowledge of spreadsheets.

● Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality.

● A valid driver’s license or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire.

Preferred qualifications for the position include:

● More than five years of experience in corporate communications, media, or related profession.

● PRSA accreditation or graduate degree.

● Experience supervising staff or students/interns.

● Knowledge of HTML and experience with popular content management systems.

SALARY: Commensurate with qualifications.
