Job Description

The Department of Chemistry at Virginia Tech invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Practice with an intended start date of Fall 2022. The candidate will coordinate the Department's career preparation advising and programming for our advanced undergraduate students. Duties include teaching a third-year career preparation course and coordinating the Department's experiential learning program, including expanding our pool of career-oriented opportunities (e.g., internships) for our students.

The primary focus of this position is career preparation and advising for students in the Chemistry Department. The successful applicant will coordinate the Department’s Experiential Learning Program. The Experiential Learning Program provides students with career-level training in academic laboratories and/or professional/industrial settings. Duties include teaching a 3000-level career preparation and experiential learning course, the evaluation of student experiential learning proposals and reflections, effective relationships building between key external partners (alumni, companies, etc.) to grow the opportunities available to our students, advising junior and senior students on appropriate coursework, degree requirements, and progress toward degree.

Required Qualifications

A Master’s degree in chemistry or a related field and experience in the practice of chemistry in a laboratory or industrial setting. The candidate must have a demonstrated ability to teach students with diverse interest, backgrounds, and abilities.

Preferred Qualifications

PhD in an area of chemistry or a related field. Preference will be given to candidates: (1) with experience in building relationships across academic, professional, and industrial settings, and (2) experience teaching career oriented skills.
