Under general supervision manages and directs the Technical Services Department of the Law Library. Oversees all technical services activities related to acquisitions, cataloging, serials control, processing, and preserving library materials in electronic and print formats. Essential Duties Summary
  • Plans, evaluates, organizes, and supervises cataloging activities, which involve the creation of electronic metadata (‘bibliographic records’) in the form of copy cataloging; partial or full original cataloging via the international bibliographic utility ( OCLC ) and or our local integrated library system ( ILS ), Sierra. These records are summarily exported to and or created in our Sierra platform, the matrix upon which the database of our online public access catalog is made available to access library materials.
  • Manages all aspects of the Law Library Special Collections, including acquiring, cataloging, and processing new materials; developing and implementing collection development policies and procedures; and ensuring the longevity of materials and collection maintenance.
  • Conducts an ongoing review of new records added to the Sierra database, which includes performing quality control for bibliographic (electronic metadata) and authority (controlled vocabulary) records. Updates, corrects, and modifies item and bibliographic records in Sierra as needed.
  • Compiles and maintains statistical data for various reports related to the library collection (e.g., for ABA, SACS and Texas State Library) and expenditures (new acquisitions via GOBI / YBP ). Prepares statistical reports and analyses on materials added to and withdrawn from the collection.
  • Recommends titles for purchase and conduct an inventory of the library holdings. Develops and implement procedures for weeding the collection. Prepares new title lists, bibliographies, and researches guides.
  • Participates in developing and implementing policies, procedures, and standards to ensure efficient operation in an automated technical services environment. Regulates and adjusts workflow so that all units (cataloging, and serials control) maximize work output and function in alignment.
  • Selects, trains, and supervises assigned support staff, including work allocation, problem-solving, and performance evaluation. Makes recommendations for personnel actions.
  • Provides reference and research services for students, faculty, staff, and public. Provides specialized reference and research assistance in the areas of genealogical research and family history.

Master’s degree or Juris Doctorate. Required Licensing/Certification

  • Acts as the ultimate subject matter expert in a professional discipline or function; understood to be the “go-to” expert on complex methods and procedures. Requires the ability to lead the development or modification of work procedures in the discipline or function for virtually any situation.
  • This position not only requires an advanced degree (master’s degree) in library and information science but also professional expertise in the library field directly related to the duties and responsibilities of the job in question.
