Director, Education Initiatives

We are seeking a Director of Education Initiatives which is a key position within the newly created Office of Economic Development for Johns Hopkins University and Johns Hopkins Health System. The Johns Hopkins anchor strategy is predicated upon, and plays a critical role in driving forward, the institution’s commitment to strengthening the City of Baltimore and neighborhoods around our campuses, while at the same time advancing our economic development portfolio and enriching the mission and work of the institution. This role will work closely with the Vice President for Economic Development and partner with the Office of the President to advance the Johns Hopkins strategy.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

Mission, Vision & Strategy:

  • Under the leadership of the VP of Economic Development and in partnership with The Office of the President, the Director of Education Initiatives oversees and coordinates Johns Hopkins’s initiatives aimed at improving the quality and access to educational opportunities for children and youth in Baltimore City.
  • In partnering with the VP on overall strategy development and execution of the Johns Hopkins Education Initiatives agenda.
  • The Director of Education Initiatives will review and analyze Johns Hopkins’s existing education grants, investments, and partnerships and monitor and evaluate effectiveness.
  • The Director will also identify and initiate new opportunities for program development in collaboration with nonprofits, community groups, and Baltimore City Public Schools.
  • The role requires knowledge of local and national education policy and research, and the ability to translate research into practice.
  • Furthermore, the development of relationships with community leaders, other foundations, government officials, activists, and participants in the areas funded is a critical component of the Director role.

Relationship Management:

  • Build collaborative relationships across Johns Hopkins University, Johns Hopkins Health System, nonprofits, community groups, and Baltimore City Public Schools that drive greater efficacy in project delivery and create new project opportunities for the team.
  • With respect to Johns Hopkins University and Johns Hopkins Health System, collaborate with faculty and on-going divisional education efforts and investments.
  • Play the lead project manager role across a portfolio of education related projects. Effectively balance effort across the portfolio to reflect relative project priorities.
  • Take on the role of a “connector” across different teams and initiatives, with both internal and external audiences.
  • Build influence, impact and leadership accountability for the Office of Economic Development across the institution to better achieve project outcomes.
  • Collaborate with faculty and support divisional education efforts and investments. Use relationships to identify new opportunities to work with other internal teams and outside groups and agencies.
  • Work collaboratively with other education funders, sharing strategies, information, and data to advance the work of grantees. Represent the institution to key program-related internal and external constituencies, as appropriate, on committees related to area of expertise and responsibilities of the position.
  • This includes representing the VP in interactions with leadership, staff, faculty and students in a variety of forums, as requested.

Grant Management:

  • Consult with grantees and other partners to generate creative and high impact projects and ensure grants are meeting outcome goals.
  • This may include: site visits, providing operational guidance and convening meetings of key stakeholders.

Analytics:

  • Provide analytical and strategic support for other internal offices that require the support or coordination with the Office for Economic Development.
  • Monitor awarded grants to ensure compliance with the terms of the grant and to assess program impact; support grantees as needed to address challenges in meeting grant objectives.
  • Responsibilities may include complex data gathering and analysis from areas across the Johns Hopkins enterprise, along with external demographic, socioeconomic, business development and educational details on a local, state and national level. May also involve utilizing data to make process and workflow change recommendations to achieve targeted and measurable outcomes.

Project & Change Management:

  • Develop and apply processes to identify change management priorities, among a quickly evolving set of opportunities in a way that is aligned with program strategy. Partner with the VP on developing content for discussion and reviews with senior leadership.
  • Develop project ideas into concrete initiatives that support system-wide education and economic development objectives.
  • Manage multi-stakeholder initiatives requiring coordination with various internal and external partners.
  • Build relationships/connections and approaches to engaging the field (e.g. scholars, practitioners, community voice) that will enable efficient landscaping of investment opportunities linked to pillars of strategy.
  • Review letters of inquiry and grant proposals; provide clear, concise and insightful written analyses and recommendations for funding, including drafting and editing proposal summaries and progress reports for review by foundation leadership.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Advanced Degree preferred. Bachelor’s Degree required.
  • 5-7 years of work experience in K-12 education or a directly related field.
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in a strategy development role is very important.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.*

* JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

** Applicants who do not meet the posted requirements but are completing their final academic semester/quarter will be considered eligible for employment and may be asked to provide additional information confirming their academic completion date.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated commitment to urban children and youth.
  • Experience working independently and collaboratively to build and launch new initiatives, including ability and judgment to balance rigor with flexibility as new challenges, insights and opportunities arise.
  • Knowledge of Baltimore City preferred.
  • Demonstrated subject matter expertise within education arena.
  • Experience or skills related to education research, designing strategy, data analysis, and long/short term visioning for education results.
  • Proven ability to lead and influence others in a constructive and inclusive manner and to build and sustain collaborative relationships.
  • Highly-skilled in relationship development; experience working with high-level/senior leaders.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, able to effectively synthesize information to reach diverse audiences and build consensus.
  • Strong strategic, creative and critical thinking skills using a diverse set of approaches and sources of insight (e.g. experience of individuals in poverty) and data.
  • Ability to lead quantitative and qualitative analyses in ambiguous areas that inform strategy and decision-making.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to make recommendations, balancing competing priorities of capacity, financial, and impact variables.
  • Collaborative problem solving skills.
  • Experience in project management.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office, Microsoft Outlook, and other office productivity tools.
  • Strong oral communication, writing and editing skills.
  • Strong relationship management skills.
