Basic Function:
Under the direction of the General Manager of KCLU Radio, the Director of Operations and Programming, implements, executes and analyzes the operations of the radio station and oversees programming.

Representative Duties:
  • Ensures optimal audience experience by facilitating orderly, dependable operation of studio-side broadcast systems, maximizing on-air staff performance and ensuring optimal presentation of station programming and continuity. E
  • Generates daily Marketron program log and merges/edits output into Enco DAD automation and playout. E
  • Evaluates programming content and schedules. E
  • Responds during non-business hours to operational-programming and news emergencies, typically via remote access and, when necessary, on site. E
  • Monitors and analyzes audience research; generates twice-per-year audience behavior reports for General Manager and KCLU Advisory Board. E
  • Creates, produces and sometimes voices station imaging spots, sponsorship announcements and program promos. E
  • Works with, supervises and trains on air talent to maintain presentation standards and style. E
  • Serves as primary backup local host and newscaster for Morning Edition and All Things Considered / Marketplace. E
  • Under guidance of News Director, co-anchors and reports local breaking news special coverage. E
  • Produces two six-day on-air membership drives, plus two, short targeted-opportunity drives. Serves as one of KCLU’s lead on-air fundraisers. E
  • Ensures compliance with FCC and selected CPB reporting requirements, including online Public Inspection File, annual EEO reports and filings, etc. E
  • Collaborates closely with News Director, Engineering, Membership, and Sponsorship departments. E
  • Works with Engineering to ensure that essential broadcast and production systems are maintained and in good working order. E
  • Assists with and attends station events. E
  • Works with campus Facilities to ensure KCLU Broadcast Center is properly maintained and cared for. E
  • Serves as vacation relief write-editor for KCLU.ORG content.
  • Contributes as needed to station marketing collateral.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Tapscan / TapWeb marketing and sales software
  • Basic operation of Icecast online audio server software
  • Comrex, Telos Z/IP and TieLine studio-based and field codecs
  • Windows operating system, Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook) and computer networks
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills


Ability To:
  • Work independently with little direction.
  • Supervise, train, aircheck and evaluate employees.
  • Interpret and convey complex and sometimes nuanced audience behavior research for General Manager, colleagues and Sponsorship.
  • Prepare accurate reports, often with graphical representations such as charts, graphs, etc.
  • Create broadcast copy that moves the listener to action, i.e., membership or vehicle donation, visiting the web site, etc.
  • Interact diplomatically, orally and in writing, with listener community and station donors.
  • Plan, organize and implement programming activities of the station.
  • Ensure that KCLU broadcast service and digital media assets are in sync.
  • Troubleshoot operator-level faults with Enco DAD or the Axia AOIP systems.
  • Work effectively and accurately, often under tight and multiple deadlines.
  • Develop, lead and bring to fruition new initiatives as needs of colleagues and / or audience evolve.
  • Communicate effectively, confidently and concisely in writing, orally in person and live on-air.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with station coworkers and institutional colleagues.
  • Learn and interpret STL and transmitter Graphical User and control interfaces
  • Operate computer databases, online Content Management System and networked computer systems.
  • Travel and attend remote training opportunities and multi-day public media conferences.
  • Be present in station on all scheduled workdays, and as needed on evenings and weekends (this is not a Work-From-Home eligible position.)


Minimum Qualifications:
Any combination equivalent to: A Bachelor’s degree from a recognized college or university and five years of increasingly responsible experience in radio or television broadcasting with two years of experience working with ENCO broadcast software and broadcast traffic systems. Up-to-date COVID vaccination (or acceptable medical documentation demonstrating need for exemption.)

Preferred Qualifications:
Public media experience, ideally in other relevant specialties (i.e. Development, Underwriting, News)
