Job Description:

As a member of the Student Affairs professional staff the Director of Jewish Life is responsible for engaging Jewish students in Jewish life on campus and integrating Jewish student life into the overall campus experience. Responsibilities include advising and engaging Jewish students in their activities, developing and supporting programming to enhance the Jewish student experience, overseeing the Hillel House, managing and developing financial resources. The position reports to the Dean for Diversity, Inclusion and Student Engagement. The Hillel House Advisory Board also works closely with the Director.

Essential Functions:
  • Creates inclusive and pluralistic Jewish community on campus that is welcoming to all. Engages students in Hillel programming and collaborates with members of the Student Affairs Division to provide programming that supports the education and development of students.

  • Ensures that programming and activities follow the policies, mission, values and goals of Washington and Lee Hillel, Washington and Lee University, and Hillel International.

  • Encourages visibility and awareness of Jewish life on campus. Builds relationships with Jewish students, faculty and staff.

  • Supports student leaders in developing and executing programming in alignment with the mission and vision of Washington and Lee Hillel, Washington and Lee University, and Hillel International.

  • Coordinates religious services and observances of Jewish holidays for students, faculty and staff and the Lexington Jewish community.

  • Develops and delivers a multi-platform communications strategy to engage all stakeholders. Supports student leaders and staff in the creation and delivery of communications materials.

  • Oversees the budget planning and management process in accordance with University process.

  • Oversees the day to day operation of the Hillel House, including room reservations and maintenance requests.

  • Manages student engagement database. Synthesizes and reports engagement data to stakeholders. Makes data-informed decisions about programming and budget.

  • Supervises Hillel work study student staff.

  • Consults with the Hillel Advisory Board to ensure programming and activities of Washington and Lee Hillel are consistent with the mission and vision of Washington and Lee Hillel, Washington and Lee University and Hillel International.

  • Collaborates with Hillel Advisory Board as needed to support the board's fundraising and recruiting work. Collaborates with Hillel Advisory Board Chair to set meeting agendas. Communicates regularly with the Hillel Advisory Board regarding the activities and organizational health of Washington and Lee Hillel.

  • Collaborates with University Advancement on fundraising initiatives, donor cultivation and stewardship.

  • Assists with recruiting initiatives, in concert with the Office of Admissions, on an as needed basis.

  • Meets monthly with campus ministers; encourages, supports, and participates in interfaith dialogue and programming.

  • Maintains network of Jewish Life professionals in academia and the surrounding community. Builds relationships with alumni, parents, community members, foundations, Federations and others who support Jewish Life at W&L.

  • Participates in relevant continuing education including staying current through readings and attending conferences and programs.

  • Other related duties as assigned.

Work Schedule: M-F, 8:30am - 4:30pm. Regular night and weekend work required.

Minimum Pay: $60,184- Pay Commensurate with Experience

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree required. Advanced degree in Jewish Studies or Jewish Community Leadership and related experience preferred. The successful candidate must have an understanding of university culture; more specifically that of a small campus. Must be available to work flexible hours and some weekends. Experience with fundraising, managing budgets and student recruitment is preferred. Strong leadership skills, excellent written and oral communications skills are essential.

Physical Requirements:
  • Fingering: Picking, pinching, typing or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with whole hand or arm as in handling.

Working Conditions: The worker is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.

Types of Work: Sedentary work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.
