Technician - Surplus Property

Position Category: Staff - Full-Time

Summary:
Utah Valley University is seeking a Surplus Property Technician! The Surplus Technician will dispose of surplus property, using knowledge of merchandising practices. Inspects property to ascertain condition estimate market value. Investigates market conditions facilities for defining time, place, type of sale and whether items shall be sold individually or in lots. Prepares advertising material . Assigns directs activities of student personnel. Determines method of property display and sets prices of items to be sold in conformity with value market. Advises interested parties of Sale/salvage possibilities. Recommends destruction or abandonment of property not deemed possible or practical to sell or salvage..
A Surplus Technician exercises independent judgment in the performance of assigned duties and possesses comprehensive knowledge of computerized materials management, inventory control, accounting systems, online sales, database design and maintenance. Significant latitude is given in carrying out surplus disposal assignments. General supervision is received from the Supervisor who reviews work through conferences, reports, and the evaluation of overall results achieved.

Key Roles & Responsibilities:

1. Manage the surplus Depart online Surplus Pick up Requests.
Assist and assign student employees in picking up Surplus Items from around campus.
Test Items and Organize for Surplus Sale, Process computers, Installing Operation Systems on hard drives. 50%
2. Process and Document Asset Disposal. 10%
3. Do online marketing for the Surplus Sales using social media. 10%
4. Keep the Surplus warehouse organized, price and tag all items as they come in. 10%
5. Answering phone calls from departments and public. 10%
6. Arranging Deliveries of surplus items to go back on campus. 10%
7. Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalency and two years of experience or a combination of post high school education and experience equal to two years. Technical or vocational degree may substitute for experience. Utah Drivers License.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of retail sales and marketing.
  • Proficient in using social media.
  • Knowledge of record management practices.
  • Organizational Skills.
  • Skills in interpersonal relations, problem solving, and decision making.
  • Skills in customer service and phone etiquette.
  • Skills in the use of computers and computer software applications including word processing, spreadsheets, email, internet, databases, and presentations.
  • Must be able to manage time well and communicate well with departments to meet our goals to pick up surplus in a timely manner.
  • Must be able to operate a manual Vehicle and be knowledgeable in the proper maintenance of Vehicles.






Preferred Qualifications:
Graduation from an accredited institution with an Associate’s degree and two years of experience related to the summary of duties; or any combination of education and/or experience totaling four years.

Physical Requirements:
Work is normally performed in a typical warehouse work environment.
Must be able to Lift, move items of 100 lbs.; using dollies, hand truck or various equipment.
