The First-Year Advising Center is excited to announce an assistant director opening on our leadership team. This supervisory role guides a group of eight full-time counselors as they execute holistic, proactive, and data-informed academic advising. We hope to employ an individual passionate about student success, who is an excellent communicator that can build rapport quickly and maintain meaningful personal relationships with employees and students. Strong applicants are team-centered, project-oriented, and willing to collaborate in a fast-paced environment.
What you'll be doing


  • Lead a diverse team of eight full-time academic counselors through their employment experience, including supervision, hiring, professional development, and performance management
  • Guide a small caseload of less than 100 first-year students using holistic advising approaches, proactive outreach, and data-informed strategy in an effort to assess potential roadblocks, take early action to mitigate them, and advocate on behalf of students
  • Motivate a team to utilize predictive analytics technology to monitor student risk trends over time, track student performance and progress toward graduation, and proactively reach out to students in need of intervention
  • Collaborate with the department leadership team in strategic planning, operational management, equity and inclusion mindset, and the administrative direction of the center
  • Serve as the primary steward for department projects and represent the department on campus-wide working groups and initiatives
  • Engage in professional development and remain current in first-year advising and people management best practices and research in order to apply new knowledge to work activities
  • This is on on-campus position on the Orem, UT campus of UVU with the opportunity to work remotely one day per week during the academic year

Required Qualifications:
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a master’s degree in a related field and two years’ experience related to the Summary of Duties.



Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of student development theory, first-year specific theory, and effective student success, retention, and completion strategies
  • Knowledge of the role of lived experiences and intersecting identities in the experience of students, particularly first-generation, adult, and high financial need students
  • Demonstrated skill in effective interpersonal communication, collaboration, professionalism, and student advocacy
  • Demonstrated skills in project management and employee motivation, development, and performance management
  • Ability to create an inclusive, collaborative, and safe working environment for employees to feel supported, valued, cared for, and appreciated
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment in order to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students and colleagues


Preferred Qualifications:
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a master’s degree in a directly related field and four years’ experience related to the Summary of Duties.

Physical Requirements:
This position performs work in a standard office setting.

Pay Range: $49,384 - $61,730 depending on experience
