Brief Summary of Work for this Position

The Alternative Transportation Coordinator position researches, helps plan, and carries out approved strategies for meeting the alternative transportation needs of the campus including car/van pooling and sharing programs, campus shuttle services, bicycle programs, and pedestrian movements. This position helps identify and assist the Parking and Transportation Manager and the Director of Auxiliary Services in researching and providing alternative transportation initiatives and programs to improve the safety and sustainability of the campus multi-modal transportation system.

Responsibilities will include:
  • Scheduling and coordinating bicycling related events and activities along with building internal and external partnerships, managing projects, assisting in the implementation of bicycle safety education programs, working directly with students, faculty, staff, and campus visitors.
  • Overseeing the self-operated shuttle program to include driver training, CDL licensing, maintaining required annual driver safety training and scheduling.
  • Administering the Bike Share Program including the campus bicycle registration process and implementation of enforcement initiatives along with alternative transportation education programs and events.
  • Serving as an advocate for bicyclists on campus including working towards improving the infrastructure, programs, and services that are available to cyclists.
  • Partnering with various entities across the campus and the community to focus on all five E’s of bicycling: education, encouragement, enforcement, engineering, and evaluation.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Preferred education, professional skills and experience

Experience in planning and coordinating transportation related campus events and activities.
  • Experience overseeing a self-operated university shuttle program.
  • Requires a passion for alternative transportation, familiarity with related sustainability, safety, and health issues, and a general knowledge regarding best practices in planning for bicycle operations, and the five E’s of bicycling (education, encouragement, enforcement, engineering, and evaluation).
  • Experience coordinating a bike share program on a university campus
  • Strong understanding of the campus population and surrounding private housing/apartments housing a large number of UNCW students.
  • Valid North Carolina CDL License with passenger and air brake endorsement
  • Working knowledge of NC CDL testing process.
  • Working knowledge of NC CDL inspection process.
  • Experience in shuttle route planning.
Required Certifications or licensure
  • Ability to obtain bicycle repair certification.
  • Ability to obtain certified instructor for bicycle safety.
