Job Details

The Chronicle of Philanthropy’s senior editor for fundraising writes and oversees one of our most critical coverage areas. Virtually all nonprofits — from the largest colleges to the smallest food banks — pursue their mission with support they raise from private sources, including individuals, foundations, and corporations. That support is the lifeblood of the $6 trillion nonprofit industry, and it can come in the form of a billionaire’s million-dollar grant or the gifts of $5 and $10 from everyday Americans. We cover it all, providing vital reporting and analyses much as the business press writes about corporate America.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Craft story ideas about fundraising that provide insights to our audience of nonprofit professionals and donors.
  • Report and write stories about fundraising for our monthly magazine and for our daily online coverage. You will spend a lot of time working on pieces that advance big ideas and profiles of interesting people and organizations in the nonprofit world. Your job is to shine the spotlight on issues that don’t get enough attention – such as the lack of diversity in fundraising, the concentration of resources, and ethical issues involving donors and charities.
  • Supervise a fundraising reporter, assigning and editing stories on fundraising. You will also occasionally work with freelancers as well as commission contributed fundraising content.
  • Contribute to and, in time, edit a newsletter on fundraising.
  • Host and provide ideas for our popular webinar series designed by the newsroom.
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Demonstrated ability to write for a professional audience in a lively and insightful way.
  • Experience and skill in creating online-friendly content in collaboration with visuals professionals. A willingness to experiment with new formats that engage readers. An active social-media presence and the ability to write in newsletter style is preferred.
  • Outstanding writing and reporting skills. We’re seeking people who are great at conceiving smart story ideas and cultivating sources who offer unique insights.
  • Experience in coaching and supervising reporters or others involved in creative work.
  • A strong record of accuracy and ethical journalism.
  • Thorough reporter who is comfortable with multiple editorial formats and topics and able to manage multiple projects.
  • Experience and interest in working with data is a significant plus.
  • Deadline driven, detail-oriented, proactive, organized, and reliable.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and willingness to collaborate.
  • Experience covering fundraising or other aspects of the nonprofit world is not required but would be extremely valuable.

Education:  Bachelor’s degree

Experience:   At least five years’ experience working for a professional publication or information service preferred.
