Position Summary 

The Department of Sociology & Human Services, Fort Lewis College, Durango, Colorado, invites applicants for a Visiting Professor in Sociology to begin in the Fall 2022 term. This is a nine (9) month appointment and duties include teaching four (4) courses per semester and fulfilling other program responsibilities as needed. 

Minimum Qualifications 

  • ​ABD or Ph.D. in Sociology or related field.   
  • Record of teaching experience and excellence at the undergraduate level.   
  • All applicants should be prepared to teach both lower-division and upper-division courses in sociology.   
  • Demonstrated ability to work in an interdisciplinary, collaborative setting.   
  • ​A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success, as well as working with broadly diverse communities. 

Preferred Qualifications 

  • ​Candidates should be broadly trained sociologists with a specific ability to teach courses in critical criminology and restorative justice.   
  • The ability to teach a wide range of courses such as youth and crime, ethnography and writing, race and ethnicities, gender and sexualities, immigration, progressive social change and social justice, and community service practicum.   
  • Knowledge of Indigenous pedagogies and methodologies, and Indigenous forms of justice.   
  • Experience working with students from a wide range of cultural and social backgrounds.   
  • Demonstrated success and/or interest in experiential learning.   
  • ​Experience working with bi-lingual communities. 


Major Responsibilities 

  • ​Teach four (4) courses per semester   
  • Hold regular office hours   
  • Engage authentically with students, the department and colleagues   
  • Maintains knowledge and awareness of digital accessibility including the American with Disabilities Act and Section 508.   
  • Produces and remediates digitally accessible materials in accordance with FLC standards.   
  • ​Perform other duties as assigned

$49,000 plus a comprehensive benefits package.
