Position Summary

This position facilitates risk assessments, educates the campus community on risk and safety matters and hazard awareness, and manages programs to ensure safety compliance, injury prevention, loss control, and property protection.
The Safety and Risk Specialist ( SRS ) works in collaboration with other staff in the Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) Department under the direct supervision of the EH&S Director. The Safety and Risk Specialist ( SRS ) also supports the Director’s work under the institution’s Enterprise Risk Management ( ERM ) program and Risk Management (RM) portfolio.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Provides general oversight and/or support to the following safety and risk management programs:
  • Fire and life safety
  • Occupational safety
  • Operational and Enterprise Risk Management

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE QUALIFICATIONS

CREDENTIALS TO BE VERIFIED BY PLACEMENT OFFICER
  1. Bachelor’s degree in occupational health and safety, environmental engineering, environmental health, safety engineering, industrial hygiene, or a closely related field.
  2. One (1) year (12 months) of professional work experience in a safety or compliance related field.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs)
    1. Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
    2. Knowledge of principles and methods for curriculum and training design, teaching and instruction for individuals and groups, and the measurement of training effects.
    3. Knowledge of environmental health and safety regulations, equipment, and strategies to promote effective local, state, or national security operations for protection of people, data, property, and institutions.
    4. Knowledge of administrative and clerical procedures and systems such as word processing, managing files and records, designing forms, and other office procedures and terminology.
    5. Knowledge of uses of chemical and their interactions, danger signs, production techniques, and disposal methods.
    6. Skill in verbal and written communication.
    7. Skill in instructing/teaching others.
    8. Ability to enter, track, analyze databases and develop rational and realistic conclusions based on relevant information to resolve issues brought to his/her attention.

Physical Demands
Work may be performed at all locations on the campus including, but not limited to: satellite facilities, mechanical rooms, electrical vaults, rooftops, basements, and steam tunnels. Physical demands may include:
• Extensive walking.
• Climbing stairs and ladders.
• Lifting and transporting fire extinguishers for inspection, service and training purposes.
• Operating university owned vehicles (including utility vehicles) using a valid driver’s license.
• Using a variety of tools, equipment and smart technology devices.
• Sitting at a desk using a variety of computer programs.

Environmental Demands
May be required to enter potentially hazardous environments following proper training and donning proper personal protective equipment when necessary to carry out assigned duties. This may include donning respiratory protection which will require enrollment into the respiratory protection medical surveillance program. This may involve working in hot and cold environments dependent upon the season and location on campus.

Although the position requires the ability to work on campus, the option to work remotely is available based upon current workloads and job expectations.
