Director of Communications/Sports Information Director



A successful candidate will play an active role in FMU's existing academic success. The Director of Communications/ Sports Information Director shall have the primary responsibilities of meeting the goals of guiding and leading an elite-level department with effective management; as well as promoting academic achievement and character of the student-athlete, fans, and the University community. This customer-centric role will provide leadership in the wellness center for planning; development; and implementation of the University facilities planning function.

Essential Functions:

Responsible for the overall management of FMU’s athletic communication department, establishing and adhering to policies, procedures, regulations, and guidelines in compliance with the policies, procedures, regulations and guidelines of all University, NAIA, State, and Federal Laws.
  • Write, and edit various athletic department communications materials including press releases, game notes, and feature articles.
  • Manage all video and broadcasting content, including hiring and staffing play-by-play broadcasters and video operators, table crews/press box staff.
  • Documents all records and historical milestones.
  • Manages all media contacts and builds relations with various local and regional outlets.
  • Assists in the development of a cohesive social media plan and execution.
  • Promote student-athletes and coaches for various national, regional, and conference awards.
  • Serve as primary contact for the Sun Conference and NAIA awards with nominations.
  • Serve as liaison to FMU Office of Public Affairs.
  • Performs miscellaneous and other job-related duties as assigned.
  • Special projects and other duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Ability to handle information of sensitive and confidential nature in the utmost professional manner. Demonstrate a high level of professionalism, initiative, resourcefulness, and personal accountability.
  • Effective analytical and decision-making skills. Excellent communication (oral and written), organizational, and time management skills.
  • Effective interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse constituents.
  • Attention to detail and adaptability to a changing environment is extremely important as well as dependability.
  • Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Lifting is required (i.e., set-up of scorers’ table, etc.), and some manual labor is expected. Work may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
  • Moderate physical activity. Requires handling objects of average weight up to fifty (50) pounds or standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day.

Qualifications

  • The position requires a Bachelor’s Degree; a minimum of three years of experience. A master’s degree and experience in higher education are preferred.
  • An expert communicator.
  • Ability to work independently and prioritize tasks in a deadline-driven environment.
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, and time management skills.
  • Ability to work with a diverse population of student-athletes, faculty, and staff.
  • A keen ethical awareness.
  • A team player that works well with others.
  • Ability to work nights and weekends as required
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite, LinkedIn Learning as well as knowledge and understanding of the organizational structure, workflow, and operating procedures. Familiar with Jenzabar technology suite or similar student information system for higher education
  • Flexibility to work outside of normal business hours. This position will require the individual to travel and work some nights and weekends.
