Job Summary:

The lab is dedicated to studying the genetics of metabolic diseases, with a special focus on diabetes. Our discovery platform is mouse genetics. We conduct genetic screens in mice for traits related to glucose metabolism, insulin secretion, and lipid metabolism.

The lab has a broad skill set, which includes physiological studies in mice, tissue culture experiments, fluorescence microscopy in isolated pancreatic islets and in cell lines. We also carry out studies of gene expression, which includes assessment of open chromatin structure and gene expression through RNA-seq. The genetic screens and the analyses of genomic data provide us with actionable clues motivate our hypothesis-testing experiments.

The lab currently has two other technicians, who have each been in the lab >20 years and have extraordinary skill and experience. They have a long history of nurturing and training other technicians as well as graduate students and post-docs.

For our research in the area of diabetes, this person will learn to isolate pancreatic islets and to maintain beta-cell lines and carry out experiments on insulin secretion. There is also some microscopy that is required; this includes immunohistochemistry of tissue sections and fluorescence microscopy of living cells imaged for protein markers and for calcium ions. The individual will also study transcriptional regulation in projects where we study the role of transcription factors in diabetes susceptibility. There is substantial data analysis and preparation of graphics for lab meetings and publications. The technician will become familiar with the literature in the field and eventually be able to implement published experimental protocols.

Responsibilities:

Provides research expertise to fundamental and applied scientific research and solves problems in research development and applications to support the advancement of research.

• 65% Collects and analyzes increasingly complex research data, conducts experiments and interviews, and documents results according to established policies and procedures
• 10% Conducts literature reviews, prepares reports and materials, co-authors publications, and disseminates information to appropriate entities
• 5% Trains individuals and groups on equipment operations, research protocols, and techniques within a specialized laboratory or research area
• 10% Develops and implements increasingly complex research methodologies, procedures, and criteria
• 5% Reviews and edits protocols to ensure accuracy, thoroughness, and consistency
• 5% Assists in developing grant applications and proposals to secure research funding

Education:

Required
Bachelor's Degree
in biology, biochemistry, genetics, or related area.

Qualifications:

Experience with tissue culture, animal work, and/or molecular biology methods is desired. We look for people with a strong work ethic, who enjoy being part of a team, who are generous in spirit, and enthusiastic about science. We are especially interested in individuals who have a background working on transcriptional regulation. This involves peforming ChIP-seq, ATAC-seq, RNA-seq, and being able to analyze the data that emerges from these methods.
