SSTE 215-02 Foundations of Secondary Education

In person - Moraga, CA campus, July 11 2022 - August 1, 2022, Mon, Wed, Fri, 12:00pm - 3:50pm

SSTE 215 serves as the introductory course to the Single Subject Credential Program and to the art of teaching. To catalyze quick growth into the practice and profession of teaching as well as orientation to the Saint Mary’s Single Subject Credential Program, this intensive course is intended to function as an extensive advance organizer (an overview or cognitive roadmap for the content to follow), as well as an immersion into gaining a critical foundation of the complex ecology of the classroom and our systems of education. Within this class, we consider who we are and what we wish to offer to the profession of teaching and to the communities in which we serve. We examine our own experiences and perspectives about communities, schools, teaching, and learning. As we interrogate our educational backgrounds, we also learn about the socio-historical foundations of education and how we may embark on the journey of becoming collaborative and transformative educators.

Qualifications:

• 
  Master's Degree in Education or related field
  
• 
  5+ years of experience teaching in middle and/or high school classrooms
  
• 
  Understanding and ability to demonstrate a sociohistorical and sociocultural analysis of inequity in U.S. schools and society
  
• 
  Ability to humanize the classroom community - e.g. to present effective methods for cultivating a caring, supportive, nurturing, and rigorous classroom community
  
• 
  Knowledge of Critical and Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy and Lesson Design - e.g. Can develop a foundation of socially just teaching and learning methods (curricular and pedagogical) that disrupt dominant ideologies and inequalities
  
• 
  An understanding of Critical Praxis, the ability to use critical reflection and reflexivity
  
• 
  Knowledge of Mindfulness and Self/Community Care including the ability to develop and incorporate sustainable mindfulness and self/community care practices in the classroom
  
• 
  Knowledge of lesson planning and design consistent with the current common core standards
  
• 
  Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
