Job Description

Northern Arizona University's Facility Services: Acess Services is now hiring one (1) Building Access Technician, Intermediate to join their team.

Under the general direction of the Building Access Services (BAS) Supervisor, and the BAS, Lead for Facility Services, the Building Access Technician, Intermediate works closely with other Facility Services trades. This position helps coordinate BAS maintenance programs and building equipment repairs with building managers and the other Facility Services trades. This position exists to aid and assist Facility Services' mission to the University by providing superior customer service to the Campus community, exercising fiscal responsibility, and practicing sustainable maintenance and operations.

This position is responsible for performing routine tasks including (but not limited to), general lock and electronic access equipment repairs and maintenance to facilities. The Building Access Technician, Intermediate completes daily maintenance logs and reports. Report concerns and condition of equipment for scheduled and deferred maintenance, and assist the other BAS staff with issues in their assigned buildings. This position works in a fast-paced environment and requires exceptional customer service skills. The person selected for this position must be a consistent and reliable self-starter, have a strong work ethic, a real teamwork mentality, be adaptable, a quick learner, and have excellent problem-solving skills.

(35%) Maintenance: Repair, Replace, & Install
  • Fabricates, installs, maintains, repairs, modifies, adjusts and services mechanical locks, electronic access control systems, and related door hardware and equipment according to and NAU standards/specifications to meet technical requirements.
  • Recodes seven chamber SFIC Best cores.
  • Adjusts doors, and any related hardware to doors are closing and latching in a proper manner.
  • Applies general/preventive maintenance and repair programs to buildings and related utilities and support services equipment.
  • Detects unsafe conditions, takes emergency action as prescribed and reports same to supervisor. Maintains a record of material used, equipment and man-hours expended.
  • Operates state-owned vehicles in the course of work activities.
  • Repairs and/or changes combinations on safes.
  • Cuts new or duplicate keys from existing keys, patterns or codes.
  • Opens locks for which there is no key or existing combinations both mechanical/electronic.
  • Repairs and services mechanical/electrified "panic hardware" on doors.
  • Helps all shops in maintaining accessibility to the campus for maintenance purposes.
  • Rebuilds safes and other major locking devices mechanical and electronic as well as any supporting hardware.
  • Provides day to day service and maintenance for assigned buildings and equipment maintenance schedules, to ensure the best use of resources available.
  • Assists the supervisor with ensuring a sufficient inventory of materials and supplies.
  • Takes a proactive role in promoting and supporting Facility Services mission and vision.
  • Maintains current knowledge and skills of industry best practices.
  • Actively maintains cutting edge knowledge of industry practices pertaining to higher education and continually suggest process improvements based on industry changes.
  • Dedication to the development of sustainable operations and maintenance practices.
  • This position is responsible for adherence to the Minimum Expectations of Employees and Work-Force Professionals of Facility Services.
  • This position participates in an on-call rotation schedule.
  • Answers trouble calls of various types in various buildings.
  • Performs all other tasks as assigned.

(20%) Testing, Inspection, and Safety
  • Ensures that OSHA and general safety regulations are maintained.
  • Adheres to new work methods or procedures, changes in safety regulations and work policies.
  • Inspects buildings and other structures using pre-established check-sheets determines functional systems and detects malfunctions and needed repair.
  • Inspects fire doors and make repairs or adjustment to is compliant with fire codes.
  • Assists Fire Life Safety staff and the Fire Marshal for NAU, in any area directed by supervisor or lead.
  • Tests and repairs all access control systems for NAU.
  • Tests and evaluates new access systems performance and reliability.
  • Inspects new construction on campus as directed by supervisor or lead.
  • Performs periodic standard inspection and preventive maintenance on tools and equipment.
  • Integrates into work routine knowledge and skills needed for advancement in the work system - attends periodic training sessions and workshops and reads/studies materials to improve knowledge and skills in the work system.
  • Attends regular safety meetings.
  • Attends work unit staff meetings; receives information and participates in problem-solving activities and functions.
  • Maintains a safe work environment and performs all duties in a safe manner.
  • Work product consists of completed work assignments; complete customer satisfaction, adherence to safety laws, rules and policies, and compliance with national and local building codes. Responsible for performing all tasks within established guidelines and instructions; adhering to and demonstrating all safety rules and procedures; and detecting unsafe work conditions and assisting in correcting them in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Responsible for observing and performing all tasks within established guidelines and instructions; adhering to and demonstrating all safety rules and procedures as it relates to chemical, electrical and mechanical safety regulations.
  • This position is responsible for adherence to the Minimum Expectations of Employees and Work-Force Professionals of Facility Services.

(25%) Customer Service and Communication
  • Communicates weekly schedule, and any changes to it, with supervisor or lead, as directed.
  • Maintains frequent communications with building managers, project managers and other trades in regard to work request status and on-going projects.
  • Gives and receives information regarding work processes by text messages, two-way radio- responds to work order requests and needs for assistance through various communication methods.
  • Coordinates with contracted trades for timely project completion. Independently notes, establishes plans, (long term and short term) for repairs, improvements, and upgrades to facilities and equipment.
  • Confers with supervisor and lead on a regular basis, discussing work processes and problems, receives counseling and instructions.
  • Maintains effective communication with all customers across campus, and foster a team relationship that allows for collaborative problem solving and process improvement.
  • Takes part in initiating measures to improve customer service.

(10%) Administrative duties
  • Accountable for submitting daily work logs and completing work order repair information.
  • Responsible for submitting online forms for Requests of Absence (eROA) and completing timesheet and supplemental pay information for payroll as directed.
  • May be required to prepare labor and material estimates. Discuss with customers, project managers and/or management staff design requirements and/or design problems with access control systems.
  • Help prepare documentation and procedures to efficiency of the department with Supervisor.
  • Maintains shop master key system.

(5%) Snow removal and emergency response.
  • Performs snow removal and other specialized tasks during adverse weather conditions and college closures.

(5%) Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school degree AND
  • 2-4 years of relevant experience; OR
  • Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Commercial locksmith experience.


Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Knowledge of the techniques for keying, repairing, installing and servicing mechanical and electrified locks and related hardware.
  • Understanding of complex electronic equipment and systems as it relates to access control.
  • Skilled in repairing, installing and servicing locks and related mechanical/electrified hardware.
  • The ability to work effectively with people from a variety of culturally diverse backgrounds.
  • The ideal candidate will demonstrate excellent customer service skill, possess and demonstrate strong communication skills, a cooperative collaborative nature along with the desire and ability to motivate staff is an essential trait of this position.
  • Work demands are not always predictable and situation response, quick problem solving and immediate technical judgment and direction-setting are required.
  • Ability to maintain sustained physical effort and heavy lifting (50 lbs.) required.
  • Knowledge of tools, equipment, and materials used in the workplace, federal and local safety laws, rules and policies governing work activities and safety equipment, national and local building codes is required.
  • Protection of tools, equipment, and materials; methods and practices applied in generalized preventive maintenance, repair, remodeling and construction activities; the rules, regulations and procedures of the work system.
  • Must be able to climb ladders, stairs and move unassisted in order to perform work activities and assess conditions; must be able to enter small confined areas, unlighted areas or elevated areas.
  • Skills to properly use, maintain and secure tools, equipment, and materials; and in using safety equipment; lifting, moving, stacking, storing supplies and protecting tools, equipment, and materials; generalized remodeling and construction activities; oral and written communications; interpersonal communications.
  • Basic personal computer skills.
  • Ability to effectively communicate.
  • The ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships throughout the University and Flagstaff community.
  • Knowledge of and ability to follow departmental/university safety rules, policies and regulations related to the efficiency and safe performance of jobs performed by the department.

Background Information

This position has been identified as a safety/security sensitive position. Therefore, per AZ Revised Statute, Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, employment history investigation, degree verification (in some cases) and fingerprinting.

In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus and NAU-Fort Defiance as these campuses have on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities.

Salary

Salary range begins at $41,421. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.

FLSA Status

This position is non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). The incumbent is eligible for overtime pay or compensatory time according to University policy. Further, the employee must submit timesheets that accurately reflect all hours worked.

This is a Classified Staff (CLS) position.
