Position Information

This is a part-time, intermittent temporary position in the Department of Theatre Arts.

** Successful candidates in these temporary appointments may be appointed from a few days up to one year depending on the assignment. Temporary appointments must end on or before the end of the fiscal year (June 30th of the following year), with the possibility of renewal.

Conditions of Employment

Employment is contingent upon candidate passing a pre-employment physical exam with the ability to lift up in excess of 50 lbs.

Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.

The person holding this position is considered a `mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.

The salary range for this classification is: minimum: $3,489.00 - maximum: $6,313.00

Major Duties

Under general supervision of the Academic Resource Manager and in collaboration with the Department Chair and the Theatre and Dance Technical Director, the Scene Shop Assistant provides technical support for University Theatre leased events and functions as stage crew and set-up for labor. The incumbent provides lead work and trains students, oversees budget for production and is responsible for a variety of technical specialties including stage and set construction, rigging and scenery automation.

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience

Education: applicable college coursework and practical experience.

Experience: one to two years of experience working for a theatre, repertory or stock company engaged in the applicable production specialty such as costume construction, stage and set construction, lighting production, and/or sound/audio production.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Ability to construct and oversee the construction of stage sets, stage properties, and other stage effects and rigging for stage and lights;
Knowledge of lighting, sound, projection, counterweight, and other stage systems and equipment;
Knowledge of design theory and principles in order to translate design and construction of materials;
Comprehensive knowledge of historical periods for design and construction of materials and effects related to applicable production specialty;
Thorough knowledge of safety requirements and standards related production support specialty and stage operations and ability to train others in safety measures and ensure compliance with codes and regulations;
Ability to paint scenery from designer renderings, elevations, sketches, or models;
Ability to create scale renderings or models;
Ability to operate and oversee the operation of stage equipment;
Ability to operate hand, power, woodworking and welding tools and metal fabrication;
Ability to train and provide lead work to students and staff;
Ability to use more complex features of applicable software packages for production specialty;
Computer skills for PC and Mac, Microsoft Office and familiar with Vecto1Work and CAD.

Preferred Qualifications

Education: Some college, preferably in Theatre and Dance concentrations.

Experience: One year of experience in the theatre or related field. Outstanding achievement in theatre technology and production is desirable.

Responsibilities

80% Provide technical support for University Theatre Leased events and function as stage crew and set-up labor; lift, carry and install theatre scenery and equipment; function as running crew and stage crew for Theatre Events and Production; provide lead work direction to students.

10% Prop and Scene Shop inventory, construction, maintenance. Construct sets for plays, musicals, and dance concerts for Theatre Arts and Dance productions in two theatre spaces and the dance studio; construct, operate, and maintain stage materials and equipment utilized in stage production activity that supports the Department of Theatre and Dance program; responsible for cost estimation, budget preparation, reconciliation, pricing, ordering, purchasing materials, supplies and props related to Theatre Arts and Dance productions; oversee budget for productions and inventories props and scene shop.

5% Set-up and oversee safety standards and policies in operation of all stages of construction and related equipment; train students on scene shop and stage equipment to include safety standards and policies in operation of all stage construction and related equipment to ensure compliance with codes and regulations.

5% Other duties as assigned.
