The Johns Hopkins Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) is the number one ranked Graduate Program in Biomedical Engineering as of the US News and World Report 2022 survey and is looking to hire dynamic academic leadership of its PhD program. The BME PhD program has been rapidly growing and now includes more than 250 PhD students in residence. This world class Academic program has a research and education portfolio that spans focus areas including Biomedical Data Science, Translational Cell and Tissue Engineering, Computational Medicine, Genomics and Systems Biology, Immunoengineering, Imaging and Medical Devices, and NeuroEngineering. To support the growth of the graduate program mission, BME is seeking a full-time leader to join our leadership team, which currently consists of two PhD program Co-Directors and an Associate Director. We are looking for candidates with strong Academic background in Biomedical Engineering or other related fields and a passion for participating in the core missions that are central to the number one ranked program in the nation as both a program leader as well as an instructor and curriculum developer in any of the aforementioned focus areas. This is a career-oriented, renewable appointment with both administrative and teaching responsibilities. Johns Hopkins University has a well-established non-tenure track career path for full-time teaching faculty culminating in the rank of Teaching Professor. The successful candidate will be appointed at the Director and Lecturer or Senior Lecturer rank depending upon their level of prior experience.

The Director will work collaboratively with the other program directors and the department director, chairing the PhD curriculum committee, serving the role as a primary resource person with regard to rules, regulations, and procedures for graduate education, and managing pedagogical issues of the program. The Director will ensure effective faculty mentoring, program requirements, and track consistent progression of students. The Director will be expected to work well with the program Co-Directors and administrative leads, and to communicate with course directors and administrators to coordinate the curriculum and academic mission requirements. The three principal areas of responsibility in overseeing the program while working with staff and faculty include: (i) services, support, and inclusivity (ii) recruitment and admissions, and (iii) training grant and curriculum, as follows

Student Experience
  • The Director will be expected to collaborate with the faculty and staff to determine appropriate services and support for student success, as well as oversee programming efforts designed to provide students a vibrant, nurturing, and inclusive environment. The Director will oversee student services and work with staff who are responsible for coordinating payroll, orientation and onboarding, and event support.
  • The Director will be responsible for the following:
    • Serve as a resource person regarding rules, regulations, and procedures for graduate education in the unit.
    • Manage graduate activities pertaining to graduate students and aid the academic staff involved in graduate education.
    • Manage any pedagogical, operational, and administrative issues that affect the graduate program.
    • Initiate activities in the department to address issues in graduate education.
    • Understand and apply the program’s most recent regulations and ensure that any graduate program information in public documents (website, brochures, etc.) is up to date and consistent with approved University regulations and information.
    • Understand and communicate the regulations and business processes affecting the graduate program effectively and efficiently to the academic staff and students.
    • Develop a good working relationship with participants in the program (faculty, students, staff), and with staff and the associate dean(s) in the School of Medicine (SOM) Office of Graduate Biomedical Education (OBGE) and the Whiting School of Engineering (WSE).
    • Ensure that all thesis students have appropriate supervision and supervisory committees.
    • Monitor trends in biomedical education and practice and provide leadership for program development and refinement.
    • Monitor and promote continuous quality improvement/internal standards.
    • Communicate programmatic needs with the co-Directors, departmental, and divisional leadership.
    • Facilitate inter-program communication, synergies, and efficiencies across our focus areas.
Recruitment and Admissions
  • The Director will be expected to oversee the admissions process and coordinate with Co-Directors and focus area leaders to facilitate the candidate evaluation, ranking, and selection process during the admissions cycle. The Director will work with faculty and staff to implement strategic enrollment management, assess enrollment capacity, and determine appropriate class size and number of offers by track, as well as coordinate diversity and inclusion efforts.
  • The Director will be responsible for the following:
    • Develop long- and short-term student admission and retention strategies in collaboration with departmental leadership.
    • Work with departmental leadership to budget for and maintain enrollment in the PhD program.
    • Work with divisional and departmental leadership to maximize financial support for students, including making students aware of opportunities for external scholarships.
    • Conduct webinars and/or in-person gatherings for prospective students, and answer program-related questions about the content and nature of the degree from a wide variety of potential students in the United States and abroad.
    • Work with the administrative team in promoting national recognition for the program.
    • Represent the graduate students, academic staff in the program, the department, or a combination of the above (depending on the issue).
    • Liaise with external accreditation/licensing bodies about curriculum content (where required).
    • Respond to or directing student inquiries to the appropriate offices (e.g., OGBE admissions and financial aid).
Training Program Management
  • The Director will coordinate with the leadership of training grant support working with faculty and the administration on grant applications, progress reports, and departmental data curation. The Director will chair the PhD curriculum committee working with faculty course instructors on continued development of a cohesive BME curriculum that is faithful to the graduate program mission.
  • The Director will be responsible for the following:
    • Provide academic oversight for selection and preparation of fellowship applications and assist students with fellowship applications.
    • Work with the OBGE and WSE to ensure that course offerings are developed, up-to-date, and that the assessment technology is understood by both faculty and students.
    • Facilitate the maintenance and enhancement of quality and timely completion of the degree.
    • Oversee program data curation and analysis to respond to academic requests for information, grant applications, and progress reports.
The Director, in the role of BME Graduate Program leader, is expected to become an institutional leader in the graduate programs of the Johns Hopkins Schools of Medicine and Engineering. The position involves a high degree of autonomy and provides the opportunity to work hand in hand with world-class faculty on building an engaging student experience featuring latest advances in graduate education in Biomedical Engineering.

We are looking for candidates with a PhD and strong Academic background in Biomedical Engineering or other STEM-related field such as electrical engineering, molecular biology, biophysics, neuroscience, and/or related disciplines. The candidate should possess graduate-level research experience and/or experience participating in the Academic mission of University life. The position requires the ability to organize and lead graduate students and their interactions with faculty members and staff. Demonstrated experience in program management and development, faculty and student engagement, and program assessment is highly desired.
