Director of Software Development and Systems Services

As the Director of Software Development and Systems Services at Rowan University you will be responsible for a team of passionate developers and application specialists while driving our enterprise strategy for core business applications and strategically planning and leading the University’s migration to the cloud. Reporting to the Associate Vice President of Information Resources & Technology, you will oversee the operation, maintenance, and enhancement of business applications and their supporting application infrastructure.

Job Summary:
  • Define, build and grow your software development team in line with business needs to meet strategic goals; empower, inspire and continue to develop an exceptional group of high-performing, diverse professionals.
  • Collaboratively work with clients within the University’s various business, academic, and operational units across the University to understand their business requirements and convert them into solutions while continually identifying areas needing improvement and presenting creative ideas to meet customer needs.
  • Lead and oversee activities focused on software development, application upgrades, and other business application initiatives.
  • Ensure day-to-day effective systems operations, including patches, upgrades, routine automation, security, troubleshooting, and technical support for all users.
  • Steer and support complex, long term projects and streams of work with multiple stakeholders.
  • Advocate for, and drive adoption of, modern software development methods, including Agile processes, CI/CD practices, and DevOps principles.
  • Devise and refine software development best practices along with policies and procedures for application support, system improvement, data governance and security to ensure continual progress and improvement.
  • Mentor team; manage departmental budgets;, forecast future process, platform, training, and resource demands.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline or 4 years equivalent work experience.
  • 5 (five) years of experience managing software development or application administration.
  • Experience leading cloud adoption and/or using Amazon Web Services such as EC2, EBS, Lamda, Dynamo and S3 or equivalents.
  • Knowledge of professional software engineering best practices for Agile development as well as the full software development life cycle.
  • The ability to balance long-term projects and strategic initiatives with short-term emergent requests.
  • Strong, demonstrable experience leading systems/technical teams through various phases of growth.
  • Advanced oral, written and presentation communications including the ability to present technical information in a way that non-technical audiences will understand.
  • Strong analytical skills with excellent problem solving abilities.
Preferred qualifications:
  • Experience with Agile software development and leading agile, cross-discipline teams.
  • Hands-on experience developing and using cloud computing resources.
  • Experience developing and presenting strategic planning materials.
  • Experience with ITSM support models and best practices.
