Southwestern University, located in Georgetown Texas, has an immediate opening for Assistant Vice President of Budgeting and Planning in the Finance Department. This position will support the Vice President for Finance and Administration (CFO) and will be responsible for providing effective leadership and direction over all policies, practices, and procedures related to the development and management of the University’s multiyear financial plan, annual operating and capital budgets, and all financial analyses. The Assistant Vice President is a strategic partner with various campus leaders, including the President’s Senior Staff. This is an in-person, full-time, twelve-month, exempt position with full benefits.

 Responsibilities

  • Leads the budgeting and financial planning function at the University and directly supports the CFO and senior leadership in advancing organizational goals and initiatives.
  • Provides strategic leadership in advancing a best-in-class budgeting, financial planning, and analysis operation by continuing to enhance existing processes and oversight and management of the University’s annual operating and capital budgets, as well as the various unit components and related collaboration with associated staff.
  • Coordinate and distribution, collection and consolidation of department budgets, expenditures, projections, and monthly financial performance reporting. Monitor fund sources, budget, revenue and expenditures trends, updating budgets, projections, making recommendations to solve funding issues and developing related reports.
  • Ensure budget monitoring and controls are utilized. Develop reports for departments to provide transparency into budgets under their control and responsibility.
  • Develops and implements technology solutions that support the development, tracking, and measurement of the University’s strategic and tactical plans, the annual operating and capital budgets, and related ongoing financial analyses.
  • Develops collaborative relationships with the VP for Finance and Administration, the President’s Senior Staff, and other key colleagues across campus to provide support and to promote an optimal environment that includes allocating financial resources based on thoughtful and transparent planning.
  • Provides support to the VP for Finance and Administration in developing presentation materials and financial analyses for various meetings, including the Board of Trustees and Fiscal Affairs Committee meetings, the weekly Senior Staff meetings, and various meetings, as needed.
  • Submit annual financial reporting/survey deliverables (credit rating agencies, IPEDS, NACUBO, US News & World Reports, etc.).
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 Position Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration or related field.
  • Minimum of ten years of progressively responsible financial management experience in higher education.
  • Advanced financial analysis, financial modeling, and technology skill; knowledge of various budget models, software solutions, and strategic planning.
  • Ability to integrate complex operational and financial considerations using critical thinking; must be analytical, detail -oriented and able to multi-task without sacrificing accuracy or timeliness.
  • Experience communicating and presenting (both oral and written) to diverse small and large groups and the ability to convey technical information in lay terms that can be understood by people with a variety of educational and working backgrounds.
  • Ability to develop policies and operational procedures for the overall department and campus as a whole; interprets and applies complex directives, policies, regulations, statutes, and procedures, and/or written guidelines for a department or major work group.
  • Must exercise excellent interpersonal skills, demonstrating poise, tact, diplomacy and an ability to establish and maintain effective working/ professional relationships with internal and external University constituents; have knowledge, understanding, and acceptance of cultural differences and the diversity within the campus and community.
  • Requires the highest level of judgement for overall department, in which critical long-term consequences on decision-making can occur.
  • Ability to responsibly handle sensitive and confidential information and situations.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Demonstrate a strong work ethic.
  • Ability to be flexible, adjust to fluctuating priorities, and produce reliable work products.

 Preferred Position Requirements:

  • Master degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration or related field and or CPA preferred.
  • More than ten years of progressively responsible financial management experience in higher education.
