HEAD COACH FOR SPIRIT PROGRAM

Scope of Job:
To facilitate all phases of the UTRGV Cheer, Dance and Mascot program including, but not limited to, demonstrating techniques, recruiting, organizing practices and games, scheduling, compliance with university policies and procedures, and safety standards.

Description of Duties:
  • Analyzes performance and instructs student athletes in strategies and techniques to prepare them for performances at all campus, athletic sports and community events. outreach.
  • Leads and supervises University Cheer, Dance and Mascot while representing UTRGV at athletic events and other campus and community related activities.
  • Supervises and manages the day-to-day activities and personnel.
  • Participates in budget planning and is responsible for controlling expenditures in accordance with budget allocations for the program.
  • Plans, organizes and implements practices, choreography, training, and physical strength and conditioning for the development and improvement of individual and team skills.
  • Advises individual team members on skills as well as team and academic performance.
  • Plans, coordinates, facilitates and collaborates with campus partners on game day activities including, but not limited to, pep rallies and pre-game performances.
  • Maintains a calendar of practices and performances including but not limited to the team’s presence and support at Athletic games, various campus and community events as needed, and support all applicable postseason tournaments.
  • Develops comprehensive plans to recruit and retain student athletes for teams.
  • Plans and coordinates all tryouts for the team, including advertising, physical clearance, and scheduling of space.
  • Prepares and provides instruction for national competition routines.
  • Assists with camps/clinics and fundraising events. Responsible for program inventory and management of equipment (i.e., uniforms, props, etc.)
  • Maintains knowledge and compliance with upholding rules and regulations related to risk management, safety, and requisite certifications.
  • Coordinates with athletic trainer to ensure that injuries are properly addressed and rehabilitated. Maintains records and rosters including physicals and emergency contact information for all team members.
  • Participates and attends trainings, presentations and committees in support of Strategic Enrollment and Student Affairs division’s efforts.
  • Develops and maintains collaborative working relationships with internal/external departments/agencies and other organizations associated with and/or receiving benefit from the program. Examples include team members, recruits, high school coaches, Athletics department, band, and other groups for game-day activities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Supervision Received:
General supervision from assigned supervisor.

Supervision Given:
Direct supervision of assigned staff.

Required Education:
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university.

Preferred Education:
None.

Licenses/Certifications:
Current AACCA/USA Cheer Safety and Risk Management Certification American Red Cross Adult CPR/First Aid/AED Must obtain Basic First Aid certification and CPR within six (6) weeks of hire.

Required Experience:
  • Two years of experience and/or involvement in supervising/managing a cheerleading team, including organization, direction, and choreography at the collegiate or high school level , or
  • Applicable combination of education and required experience on a one-to-one basis.


Preferred Experience:
Experience managing collegiate level and/or professional cheerleading operations or coaching experience.

Equipment:
Use of standard office equipment.

Working Conditions:
Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. Office Environment; some travel and weekend work is required including but not limited to varied weekends for games, tournaments, and competitions. Must be flexible with availability. Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. UTRGV is a distributed institution, which requires presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley.

Other:
Exceptional planning and organizational skills. Demonstrate effective written and verbal communication skills, and ability to work positively and professionally with community and university members. Demonstrate knowledge and ability to implement effective coaching theory, strategies, and techniques appropriate for student athletes. Possess knowledge of rules, regulations, strategies and techniques of the sport.
