Scope of Job:
The Assistant Dean for Educational Affairs, Clerkships is a key member of the education leadership team. Reporting to the Associate Dean for Educational Affairs, the Assistant Dean for Educational Affairs, Clerkships is responsible for leading curricular activities that reflect the vision, values and mission of the UTRGV SOM. The Assistant Dean for Educational Affairs, Clerkships collaborates closely with the Associate Dean for Educational Affairs and the Assistant Dean for Educational Affairs, Pre-clerkships to structure the horizontal and vertical integration of the overall UME curriculum. Together they work to promote student success by ensuring all medical students achieve the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to become competent, compassionate physician leaders.

Description of Duties:
· Oversees the daily operations of the clinical clerkship curriculum, which includes liaising closely with administrative staff, faculty and leadership to ensure timely and cohesive delivery of the curriculum.
· Assists in the design, delivery and management of the UME clinical clerkship curriculum in alignment with LCME standards and the Central Curriculum Authority Committee of UTRGV SOM (CCAC).
· Works closely with faculty and curriculum leadership to co-create, implement and assess curricular innovations.
· Oversees all aspects related to the evaluation of the clinical clerkship curriculum including student, faculty, resident and site evaluations in collaboration with the Office of Evaluation, Assessment and Quality Improvement.
· Identifies, supports, supervises and evaluates Clerkship Directors and clinical educators participating in the clerkship education.
· Oversees and manages the clerkship budget.
· Continuously appraises the efficacy of the clerkship curriculum in terms of attainment of competencies, appropriateness of sequencing, adequacy of content, pedagogical methods, etc. in order to promote meaningful curricular renewal.
· Recommends and implements high-impact, evidence-informed curricular changes to restructure components of the current curriculum and responds to concerns or suggestions from students, faculty and staff.
· Partners with clerkship directors and clinical faculty to implement revisions and updates to clinical curriculum.
· Recommends revisions and the development of clinical rotation course offerings for MS years 3-4.
· Serves on CCAC and other committees related to the clinical clerkship curriculum.
· Identifies, recruits, and develops clinical training sites for third and fourth year rotations.
· In collaboration with Educational Affairs staff managers, supervises clinical education clerkship coordinators to ensure student rotation scheduling, clerkship curricular requirements, and daily job duties have been met and provides input into annual performance evaluation.
· Advises and oversees students in the scheduling of their third and fourth year rotations through the Learning Management Software (One45).
· Works collaboratively with affiliated clinical sites in the utilization of shared resources, faculty and administrative expertise to ensure an optimal learning environment for clerkship students.
· Acts as main point of contact for students, faculty and administrators for all issues related to the clinical clerkship curriculum.
· In collaboration with the Office of Student Affairs, monitors and addresses academic or disciplinary problems arising with third and fourth year medical students.
· In collaboration with the Office of Student Affairs, assists in the development and maintenance of postgraduate career planning and advising program for medical students.
· Promotes the interests and welfare of the Office of Educational Affairs (faculty, staff, and students) while building comraderies and collegial team dynamics.
· Other duties as assigned.

Supervision Received:
General supervision from Associate Dean of Educational Affairs.

Supervision Given:
Direct supervision of assigned staff.

Required Education:
MD or DO from an accredited university.

Licenses/Certifications:
Medical License

Required Experience:
Four (4) years of leadership experience as an Assistant Dean, Clerkship Director or Clinical Course Director in undergraduate medical education.

Preferred Experience:
None.

Equipment:
Use of standard office equipment.

Working Conditions:
Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. Office Environment; some travel and weekend work is required.

Exceptional written, oral and interpersonal skills. Strong planning, organizational and managerial skills. Effective team building and team-based collaboration skills. Knowledge of current national initiatives and innovations in medical education. Knowledge of contemporary medical pedagogy in medical education; experience in curriculum design, assessment and evaluation with a focus on improving measurable student outcomes; demonstrated commitment to advancing a culture and climate of diversity and inclusion and an understanding of accreditation requirement in medical Ability to design and work within complex systems.
