Based in the Colby Center for the Arts and Humanities, and reporting to the director of the center, the Center for the Arts and Humanities program coordinator will work creatively with faculty and students across different academic divisions to forge interdisciplinary links, maintain a growing environmental humanities community, coordinate communications for the Center, and assist with a wide variety of initiatives. The program coordinator will participate in meetings with the Center, the Environmental Humanities Steering Committee, and student advisory boards.

Already renowned for academic excellence in Environmental Studies and the Arts and Humanities, Colby has made major strides in furthering interdisciplinary links between them and enhancing the Center’s dynamic Environmental Humanities Initiative. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Work with the Center for the Arts and Humanities (CAH) director to plan, organize, and execute all aspects of the Environmental Humanities Initiative, including:
    • Manage the Colby Summer Institute in Environmental Humanities
    • Act as point person for questions and inquiries about the Environmental Humanities Initiative, including email, phone, text, and face-to-face
    • Serve as a liaison between Environmental Humanities faculty and other campus offices
    • Assist in managing the Environmental Humanities faculty lecture series, including promotion of events through social media and on campus
  • Work with Center for the Arts and Humanities staff to create and circulate promotional materials for events, faculty and student programming, and other flagship events as needed, including:
    • Promote various faculty grant opportunities for the CAH and Environmental Humanities
    • Write and create stories for the CAH and EH websites and other promotional outlets
    • Liaise with staff in the Office of Communications to promote stories about the CAH and Environmental Humanities
    • Help manage FAUNA, an environmental humanities literary and art magazine created in collaboration with the Colby Environmental Humanities (EH) Student Advisory Board
    • Work with CAH staff to create the Center for the Arts and Humanities Magazine, and coordinate its bi-annual release
    • Assist in the management of the Center for the Arts and Humanities and Environmental Humanities websites and related social media accounts
  • Organize and run CAH Student Advisory Board and EH Student Advisory Board meetings and members
  • Assist the director with data-gathering, written reports, and other means of reporting and assessment
  • Schedule, plan, and staff program activities and social events, including some evenings and weekends
  • Interact in a welcoming and professional manner with members of a diverse community
  • Perform additional duties as assigned; duties, responsibilities, and activities may change at any time with or without notice
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent in education and experience; humanistic discipline preferred; advanced coursework in Environmental Studies, the Arts and Humanities, journalism, strategic communications, marketing, or related field a plus
  • At least 2 years of experience in a comparable position, preferably in a college, university, or other academic setting
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills, including strong relationship building skills
  • Strong, self-motivated work ethic, flexibility, and proven ability to work both independently and collaboratively as a member of a diverse community
  • Fluent in digital communications, particularly with regards to managing social media accounts and multi-media projects
  • Excellent organizational, project management and interpersonal skills; attention to detail and ability to handle multiple and varied tasks independently, while also working collaboratively
  • Appreciation of Colby’s mission, the work of the Center for the Arts and Humanities, and how the Environmental Humanities (an interdisciplinary blend of Environmental Studies and the Arts and Humanities) can contribute to both
  • Ability to make an impact in an effective, fast-paced, and team-oriented environment; ability to consistently meet deadlines and follow-through on tasks
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills

KEY RELATIONSHIPS:

This position will work closely with the Center for the Arts and Humanities’ director, assistant director, and the Environmental Humanities Subcommittee. This position will interact with various other departments, faculty, staff, alumni, students, and visitors.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS :

General open office and campus environment. Position involves sitting, although frequent movement is necessary. Computer usage involving repetitive hand/wrist motion is also necessary.
