JOB SUMMARY:

 

The Director of Multicultural Affairs provides leadership and oversight of the Office of Multicultural Affairs (OMA) and provides support to the LGBTQ+ and BIPOC student populations. In addition, the director works in close collaboration with the Dean of Students and the Student Affairs sector to further advance behaviors, attitudes, policies and practices that support diversity and inclusion.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Collaborate with university sectors to develop and facilitate advocacy programs that provide guidance and support to students.
  • Oversees the day-to-day operations of the department including hiring, training, evaluating, and supervising staff.
  • Develop rapport and enter into relationships with students to provide one-on-one support to students who utilize the office and seek guidance from the assistant dean/director. Engage proactively with students, and offer mentorship and success coaching.
  • Provide vision and direction for inclusion initiatives in student affairs with a particular focus on diversity, equity, and access, and serve as an advocate for the interests of LGBTQ+ and BIPOC students.
  • Support the work of the Dean of Students in response to student matters as needed.
  • Serve as a member of the Students of Concern behavioral assessment and intervention team.
  • In coordination with the Vice President for Student Affairs, serve on conduct appeals board in accordance with University policy.
  • Assist with student support and response during critical incident moments on campus or in the broader community.
  • Exhibit an understanding of the current best practices in the field of student development and an awareness of emerging issues in higher education including social justice, cultural competency, retention and persistence, at-risk student factors, community building, and student learning.
  • Manage the operating budget and expenditures related to the office to support decision-making.
  • Maintain confidentiality of information (including but not limited to: student and employee personal information, student grades, etc.), both during and after their employment with the University. Any question regarding the confidentiality of material should be referred to the supervisor. Any violation shall subject the employee to disciplinary action, up to and including termination of employment.



REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  1. Knowledge of best practices as it relates to diversity and inclusion.
  2. Collaboratively focused professional with demonstrated capacity as a fair and respectful leader, and proven ability to provide effective guidance to others.
  3. Demonstrated experience in student development/student affairs organizations.
  4. Strong desire to build relationships with students, colleagues, and college partners.
  5. Commitment to inclusion and desire to work with diverse groups of people.
  6. A relational leader with exceptional interpersonal skills, clarity of thought and professional poise.
  7. Experience serving minoritized students.
  8. Excellent organizational, oral, written and interpersonal skills.
  9. Ability to drive a personal or university vehicle for the purpose of university business.



QUALIFICATION STANDARDS

  1. Master's degree in a related field required.
  2. Three to five years of progressive experience in diversity and inclusion-based programming, preferably in an institution of higher education.
  3. Valid driver's license required. The license must satisfy both the University and insurance company rules and regulations for driving underwriting criteria.
