About the Department/Unit
At American University, undergraduate academic advising is a collaborative and purposeful partnership between advisors, the AU community, and students. Approached from a holistic perspective, this process considers and respects students' diverse backgrounds, interests, and abilities. Academic advisors facilitate the identification and achievement of the student's educational and professional goals. Our mission is to provide thorough and accurate academic advising to the students enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences, to assist them in the selection of a relevant, stimulating and challenging course of study and guide them toward choices that will make them better students and better citizens.
Summary/Objective
This position serves as part of the College's Advising Team and participates in the academic advisement of prospective and current undergraduate students, including transfer, non-degree, and degree students. The position is also responsible for the interpretation and implementation of academic regulations, policies, and procedures as they pertain to students' progress towards graduation, to ensure students are successful in their academic pursuits. This position provides support to the Director and other staff with regard to advising undecided students within the College as well as faculty advisors in assigned teaching units. In addition to advisement duties, the position will also be involved in recruitment, conversion and retention activities; and serve as the college representative to designated university committees.
Essential Functions
- Academic Advising:Advise undergraduate students in meeting degree requirements and understanding academic regulations and policy; support and teach students to develop decision making skills; address issues that affect academic performance; make appropriate referrals to other University student services; communicate with faculty regarding students in academic distress; assist students with selection and registration of courses; liaison with other University departments that support unique populations of students; provides recommendations and solutions to streamline advising processes that improve students’ academic experience and address their developmental needs.
- Academic Review:Monitor and evaluate each student’s academic progress—including transfer credit; assist students with the resolution of problems that arise after periodic degree audit updates, change of majors, graduation, and other issues that come up in undergraduate academic affairs; conduct degree clearance for graduating students; maintain accurate record of advising meetings for student files; make recommendations to the Director and/or Associate Dean regarding exceptions to academic regulations, academic warnings, probations, and dismissals.
- Recruitment and Retention Activities:Assist students with their selection and registration of courses; participate in on-campus recruitment and conversion events; create and conduct academic workshops for new students. Work collaboratively with the Assistant Director for Advising, Recruitment and Retention, the advising team, and other University staff to identify and develop experiential education programs and other special initiatives that enhance the professional, intellectual, career, leadership, and personal development of undergraduate students.
- Other Duties as Assigned: Represent CAS on university committees and serve as resource for faculty and other members of the university community; other duties as assigned by supervisor or Dean.

- Bachelor's degree or equivalent education, training and experience.
- 3-5 years of relevant experience in advising or related field.
- Master’s degree or equivalent education, training and experience.
- Must demonstrate strong attention to detail, excellent written and verbal communication skills, and familiarity with student record databases required.
