The Department of Safety and Occupational Health Applied
Sciences (SOHAS) at Keene State College invites applications for
clinical and tenure-track faculty positions in
the SOHAS Program beginning August 2022. The
College’s SOHAS program offers a B.S.
in SOHAS and Construction Safety Sciences and a fully
on-line M.S. in SOHAS. Each SOHAS degree program is
recognized as a Quality Academic Program by the Board of Certified
Safety Professionals (https://www.bcsp.org/gsp/qaps)
and students can apply for the Graduate Safety Professional (GSP)
designation at the end of their respective program.
The SOHAS program (https://www.keene.edu/academics/programs/safe/) is one of the largest majors at the College with more than 300 students currently enrolled at the BS and MS levels. Students and faculty are engaged in the American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP) Student and Granite State Chapters. The faculty also have liaisons with state (NH, MA, CT) Career and Technical Education Centers, providing training and outreach for potential students. The SOHAS Department has an active relationship with the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) and more than 100 companies, and sponsors two job fairs a year with more than 45 companies at each fair. Many students obtain paid internships and full-time jobs at the fairs.
The College is in the City of Keene (https://keenenh.gov/), a small, vibrant
New England town in the southwestern corner of the state. The town
boasts a first-rate theater venue, eclectic restaurants and
shopping, and numerous outdoor activities. The College is located
just an hour away from some major ski resorts in New Hampshire and
Vermont, less than 2 hours to NH beaches, and two hours from
Boston.
The successful candidate will deliver effective and engaging courses to support student understanding, application, assessment, and improvement of safety, occupational health and environmental health management components and systems. All candidates must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills in teaching modalities including classroom, laboratory, and on-line for undergraduate courses. Tenure-track applicants may be assigned to teach online graduate SOHAS courses. For more information about our department and SOHAS program, please see: https://www.keene.edu/academics/programs/safe/. Tenure-track professors are also expected to engage students in research as part of their scholarship at the College.
This appointment will serve the College’s Safety and Occupational
Health majors with primary teaching responsibilities integrating
the following areas: manufacturing, construction, risk management,
general industries, and worker training. Additional
responsibilities will include student advisement, curriculum
development, laboratory management, and department and College
service. Faculty provide service to the College through sponsorship
of and participation in committees, clubs, and activities.
Scholarly activity is required for tenure-track. Teaching load will
vary depending on position type and typically includes three
4-credit undergraduate and graduate courses for clinical faculty
and four 4-credit undergraduate and graduate courses for
tenure-track faculty per academic semester with additional teaching
opportunities during the summer session. Faculty may also have an
opportunity to teach courses in the College’s Integrative Studies
Program (http://www.keene.edu/isp/),
depending on SOHAS course loads.
Our students come from diverse socio-economic and educational
backgrounds, with a high percentage of first-generation college
students. By the time Keene State College students complete their
undergraduate experience, they develop critical thinking, creative
inquiry, intercultural competence, civic engagement, and
commitments to well-being and to sustainability that will serve
them as active citizens and lifelong learners. We strongly
encourage individuals to apply who will support the College’s
ongoing efforts to help students become responsible global
citizens.
At Keene State College, we share a commitment to diversity, equity,
and multiculturalism as key elements of academic excellence. We
seek faculty with a desire to provide support, mentorship, and
direction to prepare students to work within diverse communities.
One of our aspirations is to develop social change agents with the
knowledge, skills, and experience to compassionately engage with
their future employers, peers, and those they serve from diverse
backgrounds. Faculty actively engage in collaborative work and
service within the department and across the College to advance
future-thinking curricular and co-curricular approaches that
strengthen our Liberal Arts focus and achieve the College’s goals
for inclusion and excellence as outlined in the College’s Strategic
Plan.
