The University of Virginia’s College at Wise, a division of the University of Virginia located in Wise, Virginia, is currently accepting applications from faculty with doctoral and master’s degrees in various areas of psychology to establish a pool for adjunct faculty assignments. In particular, the department is interested in faculty with a background in social psychology, neuroscience/biopsychology, and counseling/clinical psychology. The need is primarily for fall (including fall 2022), but occasionally spring as well.  The need varies according to the engagement of full-time faculty in duties outside of their teaching responsibilities.  For fall 2022, we are seeking to cover a Biopsychology, a Sensation and Perception, and one special topics class in neuroscience/biological psychology.

Although UVA Wise is primarily a residential campus, a small percentage of classes are taught online, as long as the faculty member has been certified to teach in an online format. Therefore, applications for online course instruction will be given consideration.

Strongest consideration will be given to candidates with a doctoral degree (PhD or PsyD) in psychology or a related field. Master’s degree candidates will need to demonstrate sufficient coursework in the area of instruction to justify their credentialing to teach in that area.

Successful candidates must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills and should have the demonstrated ability for engaged and innovative teaching at the undergraduate level.

A member of the prestigious Council for Public Liberal Arts Colleges, the University of Virginia’s College at Wise is an inspiring place to teach, learn and call home. With a student faculty ratio of 13:1 and 2,000 students, UVA Wise is committed to excellence in teaching, personalized attention, and individual growth. On our beautiful campus nestled in the mountains of Southwest Virginia, faculty are encouraged to engage in scholarship and service that complements their teaching and mentoring, and our environment is ideal for the task. In addition to Appalachian arts and culture, on-campus wetlands and impressive geography, and a region full of opportunities for study and outdoor adventure, there are many opportunities to build partnerships with organizations, agencies, and businesses in the area and beyond.

Our student population is largely first-generation, often rural students, for whom we offer access and affordability along with challenging academic work in the liberal arts tradition. The result is well-rounded graduates who earn fulfilling positions at leading organizations and pursue graduate study at prestigious institutions, as evidenced recently when U.S. News & World Report ranked UVA Wise as sixth in the nation for promoting social mobility.

Interested applicants for this position should apply online at https://hr.virginia.edu/careers-uva and complete a candidate profile that includes: 1) application, 2) cover letter, 3) current CV, 4) letter describing your teaching philosophy, 6) description of experience and certification to teach in an online format (where relevant), 6) contact information for three references and 7) unofficial transcripts. Review of applications will be done on a rolling basis as received. Candidates who meet our standards will be invited to join the adjunct pool and will be contacted as course needs arise. Applicants must be eligible to work in the United States.
