CONTEXT OF THE JOB:

DE-INBRE is a $24M grant-funded program by the NIGMS/NIH and the State of Delaware awarded to the University of Delaware in collaboration with Delaware State University, Delaware Technical Community College, Christiana Care and Nemours/AI DuPont Children's Hospital, and the Wilmington VA Medical Center along with many other affiliate institutions across the State of Delaware. The Coordinator works collaboratively to develop, update and manage DE-INBRE communications including program website and social media outlets; works with programmatic leadership to develop statistical one-page documents highlighting each programmatic core and institutional accomplishments related to the program that are accessible to general audiences; assists with developing reports to comply with state, federal, and internal reporting requirements; provides support for grant applications; and will plan and manage various inter-institutional events and conferences. This position is based in Newark, Delaware but it is estimated that 75% or more of the work can be performed remotely. However, irregular periods of onsite work to support DE-INBRE events are required.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Works closely with the program evaluator to translate complicated scientific information into "stories" that are accessible to the public which will be published in internal and governmental reports as well as, social media, newsletters, and related channels.
  • Initiates and prepares DE-INBRE related communications, including online and social media content, articles about programmatic initiatives, feature stories about student and junior investigator successes, and update digital content to promote program and events.
  • Work in collaboration with each partner's office of communications and marketing to ensure guidelines for brand identity, messaging, and strategic communications positioning are adhered to.
  • Manage program website and social media channels. Identifies, creates, schedules and published content.
  • Assist in communication and marketing support of small and large-scale events for the program.
  • Coordinate and manage events and meetings for the program. This includes monthly working group and steering committee meetings, bi-annual external advisory meetings, and annual regional and national conferences.
  • Provide support for key programmatic initiatives under the direction of the DE-INBRE PI.
  • Maintain organized records and checklists for core programmatic activities.
  • Assist program leadership with coordination, development, and editing of grant applications.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS
  • High School diploma/GED, associate degree preferred, with five years related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • A background in/familiarity with a discipline related to biology, chemistry, health science, or engineering, especially as related to biomedical research.
  • Experience in community relations, administration and/or event planning preferred.
  • Knowledge of public relations and communication tactics, including internal and external communications, presentation skills, events, and marketing communications.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
  • The ability to operate independently and to use sound judgment, initiative, and discretion in all interactions with a diverse group of constituents.
  • Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities.
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple projects, tasks; and deadlines simultaneously while working remotely.
  • Prior experience translating technical information into stories accessible to non-scientists/the public is a plus.
