Position Overview:

This position is classified as a 10-month full-time at-will employment appointment with administrative (30%) and coaching (teaching) (70%) responsibilities. This position is eligible to accrue sick leave at a rate of 10 hours each month, but will not accrue vacation leave. The coach will organize and direct all aspects of a successful intercollegiate track & field and cross country program. Manage track & field/cross country annual budget and ensure fiscal responsibility of the program. Provide daily instruction to staff and student-athletes. Provide strategic direction, leadership, and motivation. Oversee coaching, recruitment, program development, academic progress, training, travel, and scheduling of student-athletes. This position reports to the Director of Athletics. Salary is commensurate with experience. The general schedule for this position is 40 hours a week but may vary by season.

Department Specific Essential Job Functions:

Responsible for identifying and recruiting athletically and academically qualified student-athletes; Scheduling and conducting regular practice sessions; Developing, implementing, and enforcing team rules; Overseeing the administrative process for team travel, budget, student-athlete eligibility and academic progress; Participating in fundraising and public relations activities, as well as media requests and marketing efforts; Promoting the philosophy and objectives of the Intercollegiate Athletics program that student-athletes should be successful athletically and academically; Supervising daily activities of assistant and graduate/student assistant coaches and conducting performance evaluations on an annual basis in accordance with University employment guidelines.

Giving routine assessment and feedback to student-athletes in regard to their performance; Collaborating with various program support areas (i.e., Strength and Conditioning, Athletic Training, Academic Support, etc.) to achieve program goals and objectives; Working closely with University Student Financial Services and other appropriate personnel to manage track & field/cross country scholarship budget; Administering the track & field/cross country budget and equipment purchases, in accordance with institutional purchasing policies and in coordination with the AD and Assistant AD Finance; Collaborating with Assistant AD Academics to implement academic initiatives that monitor and ensure academic progress of student-athletes in accordance with NCAA, Conference and University rules; Leading community service efforts of program and actively engages student-athletes and staff in appropriate service activities.

The coach will keep abreast of changing rules, techniques, technologies, and philosophies relevant to the sport. Work closely with Athletics Compliance staff to ensure adherence to all applicable NCAA, Conference, and University regulations. Demonstrates a thorough knowledge of and adheres to applicable NCAA, Conference, University, and departmental rules and regulations. Upon notification of an NCAA violation, report the violation to the Athletics Compliance Office. Also has a responsibility to follow applicable procedures and cooperate fully with any and all investigations of potential violations of NCAA, Conference, University, or departmental rules or regulations. Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Qualifications Required:

Requires a bachelor’s degree in related field plus minimum 3 years of relevant experience.

Qualifications Preferred:

Master’s degree and experience as head coach, preferably at the collegiate level. Understanding of NCAA Division II and experience in budget and scholarship oversight. Proven track record of successful recruiting.
