Description
We are seeking a talented software engineer to join the Research Software Engineering team at Dartmouth College. As a member of this team, you will advise on, design and develop bespoke software applications to facilitate cutting edge research in fields ranging from healthcare to ancient languages, working closely with the principal investigators and their lab staff. Our ideal candidate is, first and foremost, curious. We encounter a wide range of technical challenges spanning many technologies and many scientific domains. Some recent projects include tracking octopus eyes using machine vision and surveying cancer survivors during exercise programs using Fitbit devices. If you enjoy learning new things, you will be doing that very frequently as a member of the team.
A successful candidate will have a strong understanding of fundamental software principles and the software development lifecycle. We use a broad range of programming languages. Much of our work is in Python, so strong Python programming skills are a plus, but more important is a willingness to learn new technologies. You might join a project that requires you to learn CUDA programming, then follow that with one which uses Ruby. If the prospect of learning a broad range of languages and domains sounds appealing, this is the place for you. We work closely with researchers, so strong communication skills are a must, especially the ability to translate their research goals into technical requirements.
We maintain a very relaxed work environment. We emphasize giving developers space to experiment and explore, and believe that providing professional development is vital to a happy workplace. We work primarily remote with few hard availability requirements. If you do your best work late at night, great! Code late at night. We care about progress and maintaining work-life balance, not the number of hours sitting at the computer.
Join the Research Software Engineering team at Dartmouth and help add to the collective human knowledge.
