Job Summary

The JILA Building Manager ensures that the JILA building and building systems support and advance the research mission of JILA as an integral and core component of JILA’s research success; within the constraints of the building and systems in place. This requires coordination, supervision, and leadership for the operations and proper functioning of the JILA building The Building Manager reports directly to the Chief of Operations as part of a collaborative, high-energy and lively team focused on research excellence, productivity and mutual support. Close collaborations with world-leading scientists, creative and dedicated staff, students and postdocs as well as with a variety of University departmental personnel make this position interesting, exciting and rewarding.

Who We Are

JILA was founded in 1962 as a joint institute of CU Boulder and NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology). JILA's fellows include two Nobel laureates, Eric Cornell and John Hall. JILA's CU members hold faculty appointments in the Departments of Physics; Astrophysical and Planetary Science; Chemistry and Biochemistry; and Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology; as well as in the School of Engineering (JILA pays for summer research, funding 32 Fellows). NIST’s Quantum Physics Division members hold adjoint faculty appointments at CU in the same departments. Each year, JILA scientists publish more than 200 original research papers in national and international scientific journals & conference proceedings.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Facilities Manager
  • Inter-Departmental Liaison:
  • With JILA Building Engineers: be responsible for and review preventive maintenance programs and other maintenance issues/repairs.
  • With CU Facilities Management Staff: fully understand implications of all work to be done in JILA and lead coordination/communication on behalf of occupants.
  • With Real Estate Services: collaborate on operations/maintenance work orders.
  • With Custodial staff: ensure that all areas of the buildings are being properly cleaned and that appropriate services are being provided.
  • Intra-JILA Liaison:
  • Primary contact person for all JILAns for building-related issues.
  • Work directly with scientists and researchers on specific issues for labs and other areas as well as for the building overall.
  • Periodically evaluate JILA buildings and spaces for problems, issues, and areas for improvement and communicate these needs to FM, JILA COO, and JILA Building Operations Committee.
  • Serve as committee liaison, along with JILA COO, to JILA Building Operations and JILA Planning Committee.
  • Collaborate with Stockroom/Building Coordinator to ensure common areas, meeting rooms and stockrooms are functional to support JILA research.
  • Primary person responsible for submitting, monitoring, and offering feedback on work orders for JILA.
  • May perform limited hands-on work in coordination with Facilities Staff as mutually agreed upon and documented in advance.
  • Lead and coordinate on and off-site storage needs in partnership with JILA Property/Equipment Managers.
  • Function as primary Building Proctor. Attend campus building proctor meetings and trainings.
  • Coordinate with JILA COO and Office of Emergency Management to plan and update critical incident planning, and communicate this to the building occupants each academic year.
  • Coordinate with outside vendors for maintenance of department equipment.
  • Coordinate activities and communication within JILA for facility-related emergencies that may arise, such as chemical spills, fire alarms, electrical or other building system outages, floods, etc. in collaboration with JILA COO and appropriate agencies and campus departments. Serve as a resource for Facilities Management and other responders during emergencies as to how building systems work, what areas are especially critical, etc.
  • The position may assist with various facility-related safety issues as time allows.
Department Project Manager
  • Serve as primary JILA contact for CU Project Manager to provide information on building systems/operations; to assist with communication, coordination, and scheduling of projects, and represent JILA interests throughout the life of a project from proposal to close-out.
  • Be responsible for and coordinate department projects including new faculty laboratory space, existing laboratory and office remodel, interdepartmental moves, and infrastructure improvement projects.
  • Lead concerns, changes, outages, disruptions, and/or emergencies related to ongoing projects.
  • Communicate end-user needs and ensure that the Project Manager, Design Team, Contractor and other involved parties clearly understand and respond to the project goals and requirements.
  • Collaborate with JILA scientists and staff, Facilities Management (FM) project managers, architects, engineers, external contractors and vendors, Facilities Management shops, and Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S).
  • Collaborate with JILA Building Operations Committee, JILA COO, Real Estate Services, and CU Facilities to develop draft proposals and priorities for Replacement/Repair (R&R) and other projects.

The salary range for this position is $75,000 to $90,000 annually.

What We Require
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree.
  • An equivalent combination of technical degree, education, and/or experience may substitute.
  • Three years of experience working on building systems within a laboratory or similarly sophisticated building.
  • Demonstrated ability to track and monitor a large number of concurrent projects and tasks.
  • Project management experience relevant to the job duties.

What We Would Like You To Have
  • Solid understanding of HVAC and control systems, plumbing, electrical and other trades.
  • Experience working with construction and contractors, and with infrastructure systems.
  • Familiarity with scientific research environment and related laboratory safety practices.
  • Ability to read and interpret building, engineering and construction drawings, blueprints and plans.
