Purpose of Position: Under general supervision performs installation, repair and maintenance of electrically powered systems, including all electrical tasks and maintenance of campus housing and administrative building's electrical wiring, computer wiring, equipment repairs and installation.

Tasks/Duties Performed:

  • Install, maintain, modify and repair all electrical wiring, control, and lighting systems and associated electrical equipment
  • Remain in compliance with all state and local building regulations along with current National Electric Code
  • Inspect and test components of electrical systems
  • Perform preventative maintenance on university buildings and electrical systems
  • Run computer cables, connect computer jacks and plugs and test for adequate operation
  • Utilize blueprints, wiring diagrams and manufacturer's installation manuals to complete assigned projects
  • Install and maintain wiring, control, and lighting systems
  • Plan, layout, install and assemble materials and fixtures in order to complete a scope of work.
  • Work collaboratively and professionally with all co-workers and members of the campus community.
  • Observe all safety regulations and wear protective gear whenever required
  • Manage, direct and supervise Assistant Electrician
  • Any additional work or projects as may be assigned by the supervisor.



Qualifications:

  • Ability to exhibit journey level skill in maintenance and repair procedures including preventative maintenance, breakdown repair and troubleshooting, construction, installation and fabrication techniques which are typical in the trade.
  • Ability to learn and perform all essential job functions accurately, with minimal direct supervision, within two weeks after the employee begins work.
  • Demonstrable knowledge and skills for electrical installation, maintenance and repair of electrical systems and equipment
  • Good mechanical judgement and working knowledge of general construction principles
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills with ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and systems diagrams
  • Ability to work second shift and weekends when necessary
  • Ability to work overtime to respond to any emergencies
  • Ability to properly use hand tools and power tools
  • Able to work well on a team
  • Excellent hand-eye coordination

Physical Requirements:

  • Physically able to reach, stretch, bend and walk during the daily routine, with ability to stand for long lengths of time
  • Ability to climb and work from ladders and lifts
  • Ability to use necessary power equipment for extended periods of time
  • Ability to perform work in outside temperatures and weather conditions
  • Capable of lifting and carrying a minimum of 50 pounds without assistance

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma/GED and trade or vocational training required; otherwise, any combination of education equivalent to graduation from high school or other combination of education, training and experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of experience in the electrical trade.
  • Valid New York State driver's license is required that satisfies both the University and insurance company underwriting rules and regulations for driving a motor vehicle.
  • Ability to drive a university vehicle for the purpose of university business on a regular basis

Status: Position is full time, 40 hours per week, non-exempt staff (Monday-Friday) 7:00am-3:30pm (30min unpaid lunch) and may require additional hours during peak periods or inclement weather.

Benefits are available the first of the month following the full-time employee's date of hire and include health, dental, vision insurance, and fully paid life insurance. In addition, we offer fully paid long term disability insurance after 3 months of employment. Eligibility for the 403b retirement plan is available to full-time employees upon hire and an 8% employer match after one year of service. Excellent time off benefits for holidays, vacation and personal time is included. Tuition waiver benefits are also available for full-time employees and their qualified dependents.

Post-Hire Trainings

  • Various trainings assigned upon hire and annually thereafter by the Office of Employee Engagement.
