Job Description

BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY

This is skilled journey level work in the repair, maintenance and application of roof surfaces. All work is subject to spot checking and inspection for conformance to specifications and accepted standards of the trade.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES

Perform construction, maintenance of roofs. Install and repair roofs with roofing materials (composition shingles, slate shingles, wood shingles, built-up and single ply) to make them waterproof.
Remove old roof by tearing and/or scraping down to sheeting. Clean surface and apply new roofing material to required thickness. Perform patchwork by similar process. Operate tar kettle, power hoist and other roofing equipment.
Install, repair and maintain flashings, valleys, gutters, downspouts, and related items.
May perform or assist in performance of any of the following: preparation of cost estimates, preparation of material orders, maintenance of records and preparation of reports.
Clean, maintain, safely operate and properly store all tools and equipment.
Observe and enforce all safety requirements related to equipment operation.
Due to necessary fluctuation of workloads in the skill area, an incumbent in this class may be required, on an occasional basis and according to need, to perform duties outside his/her trade area. Normal safety requirements, scheduling and the most efficient use of staff and equipment are taken into consideration in such assignments.
Perform related duties as assigned.

Salary

Salary Range: $15.72 - $25.93 per hour

GGS Grade: E

7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday

Minimum Qualifications
  • A high school diploma or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired is necessary.
  • Four years of actual work experience and training including the equivalent of apprenticeship or vocational training in the trade.
  • Ability to read blueprints, plans, and drawings.
  • Skill in maintenance and use of tools, equipment and materials of applicable trade.
  • A valid driver’s license may be required.
  • A person working in this classification will need on a daily basis, to be able to:
    • Grasp, lift, maneuver, rotate, and otherwise use small to large trades tools and equipment.
    • Grasp, lift, carry, and set down heavy (50-80 lbs.) objects on a daily basis.
    • Grasp, turn, twist, pull, push, left, and otherwise move equipment, controls, parts, etc.
    • Visually assess maintenance, construction and repair needs.
    • Climb and work from ladders, stairs, and scaffolding.
    • Depending on the nature of work performed, the incumbent may be required to wear a respirator and/or self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) as outlined in the “Industrial Standard for Respirator Use”.
