Job Summary:

The Department of Medical Sciences (DMs) of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, School of Veterinary Medicine invites applications for a Primary Care Clinical Instructor. This is a 100% 12-month appointment within the Small Animal Primary Care Section of the UW Veterinary Care clinical service within the UW Veterinary Care Hospital on the UW-Madison campus. Approximately 28,000 small animal patients are evaluated at UW Veterinary Care annually. The current Primary Care case load is approximately 4,250 cases per year.

Responsibilities:

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

CLINICAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Assist in receiving cases on the Primary Care Service at UW Veterinary Care (UWVC) Hospital
2. Provide routine care and veterinary medical urgent care for outpatients
3. Perform routine surgery and dental procedures on small animal hospital patients

TEACHING RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Provide clinical and communication training to fourth-year veterinary students assigned to the Primary Care Service to the UWVC.
2. Provide training and supervision of Primary Care Interns and Residents.
3. Within the assigned work schedule, assist with the laboratory or didactic teaching of veterinary students in areas pertaining to primary care, including the Animal Health, History, Restraint & Physical Examination course
4. Provide first through third-year veterinary students an opportunity to observe and participate in the Primary Care Service Rotation.

SERVICE RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Participate in limited School of Veterinary Medicine and/or Department committee activity.

Education:

Required
Terminal Degree
DVM (or equivalent) required

Qualifications:

A minimum of three years clinical primary care experience or internship training preferred. Aptitude and/or experience in clinical instruction of DVM students, interns and residents are expected. Strong general practice experience, including interest and capabilities in routine surgery, dentistry, and anesthesia. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills required.

License/Certification:

Required

Eligibility to obtain licensure to practice veterinary medicine in Wisconsin

Preferred

Certification in the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (canine and feline practice or feline practice) preferred, but not required

Additional Information:

Extensive opportunities for collaborative research and teaching exist within the School of Veterinary Medicine and the UW- Madison campus. The School of Medicine & Public Health, the College of Agriculture & Life Sciences, the School of Pharmacy, the Biotechnology Center, and the School of Education are located within a short distance of the School of Veterinary Medicine on the UW-Madison campus. A close relationship also exists with the Wisconsin State Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory which is located within the same footprint on campus as the School of Veterinary Medicine. UW- Madison considers the School of Veterinary Medicine to be a major factor in its overall success as a top five university in terms of awarded federal funding.

SVM is in the midst of construction of a new facility that will improve instruction space for students, double the size of the school's small animal hospital and significantly enhance the large animal hospital, expand labs for studying naturally occurring animal and human diseases, and increase and modernize infectious disease research space.
