Job Description:
Under direct supervision of the Director of Nursing, the Simulation and Skills Lab Coordinator organizes and manages clinical learning simulation and skill lab facilities and services for the health science division, primarily in the nursing program.

The Coordinator is responsible for day-to-day operations of the skills/simulation lab, including simulation-based activities, inventory maintenance and operating simulation equipment. In addition, the coordinator collaborates with faculty to design, plan, schedule simulation activities adhering to program policies, course objectives, program outcomes, and simulation best practices. Coordination includes:

  • Scheduling of specific lab simulation and skills lab activities.
  • Simulation and Skills Lab set-up.
  • Supervision of student use of laboratory supplies and equipment.
  • Inventory, requisition, management, and maintenance of lab equipment and supplies.
  • Establishes and updates policies and standard practices related to the use of simulation technology and lab equipment.
  • Maintains databases of simulation-based activities, supplies, equipment, login information and any other information pertinent to the running of the simulation and skills lab.
  • Maintains records including evaluation forms, both A/V and SP consent forms and all other paperwork related to simulation.
  • Prepares a comprehensive annual report of simulation updates, skills lab updates, successes and necessary improvements to be submitted to the Health Science Dean, and Director of Nursing for distribution to faculty.
  • Interacts with outside vendors, and works closely with Health Science Lab Technician for evaluation and selection of hardware, software, equipment, and supplies.
  • Plans for, develops, instructs and evaluates Standardized Patients (SP's) simulation activities utilizing the Standardized Patient Manual.
  • Develop strategic plan for the lab, including preparation of the annual budget for skills and simulation laboratory.
  • Related Duties as assigned.



Provides instruction to a diverse student population through the practicing of nursing skills and abilities in the Simulation and Skills Lab as well as other potential health science courses.

Courses to teach may include: Patient Care Skills - Open Lab HS168/HS268

Develop, present, evaluate and refine diverse, inclusive, equitable, and anti-racist scenarios for simulation experiences for a broad range of medical situations, utilizing role playing, props, dialogue and debriefing to create a realistic and stimulating learning environment for diverse cohorts of nursing students. Formulate new simulation exercises based on nursing curriculum and student- or faculty-identified needs and current practice issues; define learning outcomes and storyboard scenes, patient histories, lab results and doctor's orders relevant to the scenario. Prepare scripts for characters and simulation paths. Set up hardware and software in classrooms and simulation labs as necessary; match instructor requests for mannequins with available equipment. Schedule in coordination with other nursing and psychiatric technician faculty scheduled simulation teaching activities. Provide orientation and advice to instructors on simulation laboratory procedures and use of equipment and materials. Maintain mannequins and other equipment. Monitor and supervise general cleaning of the simulated hospital lab.

Schedule use of lab and equipment related to HS 168/HS268. Arrange adequate staffing of skills lab. Supervise students during scheduled laboratory periods. Participate in the overall skills check off for students. Follow up and schedule practice and retesting sessions for students with missed skills. Serve as a resource mentor and work with students requiring remedial assistance. Provide feedback to instructors on student progress.

Offer continuous and ongoing feedback to a diverse faculty and staff regarding lab use. Works closely with the health science division lab technician to inventory and restock laboratory materials. Acts as a practitioner, instructor, and liaison with the administration, faculty, and students in providing simulation and skills lab services to fulfill the needs of the health science division curriculum, with a primary emphasis on the registered nursing curriculum. Ensures compliance with the policies and procedures for the health science Simulation and Skills Labs in coordination with the Director of Nursing and the Health Science Dean.

Participate in curriculum development and serve on department, division, college and district committees as necessary to maintain and improve the instructional program; participate in appropriate professional development activities.

Participate in co-curricular activities, including planning, implementing, and teaching in special programs designed to support student success.

Participate in the formulation of Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) and the Student Learning Outcomes assessment cycle.

Maintain formal office and campus hours; participate in department and division meetings.

Maintain current knowledge of instructional methods and new technologies pertinent to areas of assignment; learn and apply emerging technologies and advances (e.g., computer software applications) as necessary to perform duties in an efficient, organized and timely manner.

Teach scheduled classes and perform related duties as assigned, including timely compliance with clerical and administrative responsibilities; comply with district, college and division policies in the performance of duties.

Instruct and assist in the growth and success of a diverse population of students through careful preparation of course materials, effective teaching methodologies and informed critical feedback on assignments and discussions.

Develop culturally relevant course content, culturally responsive pedagogical techniques, and effective practices for engaging students who are diverse and/or are students who are historically underserved. The ideal candidate should have experience in this area with African American, Latinx, Native Americans, Pacific Islanders and other disproportionately impacted students.

Work cooperatively with staff and students.

Evening and/or Saturday assignments may be required as part of the regular contract.

Minimum Qualifications:
A Master’s or higher degree, which includes coursework in nursing, education or administration. If degree other than nursing submit information verifying coursework in nursing education.

AND ALL OF THE FOLLOWING:

Possess minimum qualifications established by the California Board of Registered Nursing.

A. Completion of at least one (1) years’ experience teaching courses related to registered nursing or completion of a post-baccalaureate course which includes practice in teaching registered nursing.

B. Direct patient care experience within the previous five (5) years in the nursing area to which he or she is assigned, which can be met by:

  1. One (1) year’s continuous, full-time or its equivalent experience providing direct patient care as a registered nurse in the designated nursing area;
  2. Or One (1) academic year of registered nurse level teaching experience in the designated nursing area or its equivalent

C. Possess current and valid California Registered Nursing license by August 18, 2022.

D. Possess current Health Care Provider Basic Life Support Certification by August 18, 2022.

Desirable Qualifications:
Expertise in culturally responsive teaching in nursing, particularly as it relates to the relevance of nursing to student’s lives, interest, and communities; demonstrated ability to address equity gaps of racially minoritized groups and other under-represented people within the healthcare fields, including nursing.

Three years experience as a healthcare provider with direct patient contact. Examples of this experience may include Medical Assistant, Emergency Medical Technician, Patient Care Technologist, Certified Nurses Aide, Licensed Vocation/Practical Nurse, Medical Corpsman.

Demonstrated experience in setting up simulation activities and providing simulation instruction in a related health science field.

Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator (CHSE) Certification (or other recognized simulation education certification in health science or related field).

Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of simulation and skills lab equipment, and technological aids.

Skills Development and Simulation Instruction experience in a related health science field. Demonstrated experience with the use of medical instruments, equipment, and supplies.

Demonstrated knowledge of medical terminology.

Experience and applied knowledge with computers, utilization of various computer software office applications, and any specific health care programs, such as EMR (electronic medical record) software, Laerdal simulation software, and/or Omnicell medication dispensing software.

Self-directed and innovative; highly organized, prioritizes effectively and displays high level of integrity with student interaction.

Effective oral and written communication skills.

Experience working in a team-teaching environment.

Knowledge of adult learning theories, effective teaching strategies and learner assessment principles. Experience designing alternative learning activities that develop variously desired training outcomes.

Ability to meet challenges of adult learners with diverse backgrounds.
Knowledge of policy creation, implementation, and revision; including maintaining specific accreditation standards.
